Going out in July with beautiful young people. Fat and old. What do I wear???

I am not a great person for going out for social occasions. Much prefer a meal in a pub.
Anyway, last year I had a breakdown and I have worked hard to get better and my confidence has increased. But I've put on loads of weight and am currently size 26. Please don't tell me to loose weight as it is something I am beginning but I cannot put pressure on myself

Anyway we are going into a city. They are young and beautiful and tje kindest people but I can't bare the thought of cold shoulder, butterfly covered clothes. I am so far removed to what is fashionable!
My belly and thighs are the biggest problem. Wide legged trousers look awful cos of my belly as they have to be so so big for the they are huge.
Also, I have big boobs ( gg ) and so can't wear strapless bras and I don't wear heels.
Please please give me some help!

Haven’t read the full thread - take a look at Laura Adlington on instagram - she is a similar size and looks FABULOUS. Lots of great outfit ideas on her page.

parisianprincess · 05/06/2025 23:31

Examples of Laura’s recent outfits that might fit the bill. Lots of dress examples on her page too if that’s your preference.

I would probably wear sandals, trainers or wedges. I like gold shoes to dress outfits up with nice statement jewellery. Im a similar age and a size 18-22 depending on the shop.

h&m is good, simply be and Next

Thank you so much everyone for all of your ideas and for the supportive comments. This thread has really made me look at myself and how I'm dressing.
I've got myself into such a rut clothes wise that this has really made me think about my complete wardrobe rather than an outfit for one evening.
For July I've decided on the leopard print dress. The lovely black embroidered one looked horrific on and I'd been set on that one! The lovely one from next that someone had mentioned ages ago was too tight on my boobs. However there have been so many more dresses and ideas on here that I'm going to look at more for my wardrobe in general.
Thank you so much everyone.

That looks lovely op and I’m so glad you’re feeling a bit more excited about glamming up and going out.

Credit to you, too, for moving through hard times - and have fun! 🏆🍹

WOW! Loving the dress you chose OP! I'm sure you'll look and feel great! I too had lost my way a bit clothes wise due to gaining weight, and ended up with absolutely nothing to wear but stretched out joggers and sweatshirts. Then, I was invited to a wedding, so had to find something, after a lot of ordering and returns, I eventually found a dress that made me feel like a million dollars, I then bought a fabulous brightly coloured jacket, which went with it, and like you, I suddenly found myself inspired to invest in myself again.

I hope you have a wonderful time with your friends, and that you will come back and tell us all about it.

That looks like a fabulous dress, OP, and it's lovely to hear you sounding upbeat and excited. I hope you have a wonderful night out.
