I need a dress for my daughter’s milestone birthday party.

Im just over 50 with mid length grey hair that i get lots of positive comments on about how lovely it looks.

Ive lost 3 stone recently so don’t know how to dress for my shape
im 5’7, size 14 ish probably a bit less

slim long legs, good boobs considering, narrow waist but have the c-section apron and hips are still wider than i want.

would prefer a short sleeve as upper arms not as toned as i’d like but that’s probably all in my head as they are still fairly slim

its a summer do so not black if possible. i suit autumn and jewel colours and look dreadful in white, pale pink, coral, pastels etc

i want to look elegant, not frumpy

budget £200

please help S&B

Have a look on NeverFullyDressed. Gorgeous dresses that I'd love to buy!

I’d wait for the sale and get something from here:

thanks for the reply’s but nothing is jumping out as glamorous. i haven’t worn anything ‘nice’ since i lost weight so all my other stuff is too big and would look odd if altered.
the quest continues!

Is it a day or evening party?

mumonthehill · 25/05/2025 07:14

I have just bought the one hundred stars willow pattern kaftan dress and it is absolutely beautiful and very easy to wear. I am going to dress it up a bit but i was pleasantly surprised! Might be worth a look.

What is the context of the party, @lovelybittersquirrel?

And what is your idea of glamour?

it’s a milestone birthday party in a swish city bar (private function part).
glamour to me is classy, subtle sparkle/shimmer. maybe a hark back to 50’s high end nightclub. it’s hard to pin point!
not something someone half my age would wear but not something my old mum would say ‘that’s nice, is it bon marche?’

it’s evening but in summer so will be light outside for half of it and we have an outside area

I think it's very elegant in an "oh, this?" -sort of way - effortlessly elegant is one of the best ways of looking good IMO!

CherryblossomRose · 25/05/2025 10:50

Can't do links sorry but what about the Amy Spot Midi dress from Phase Eight?

It has a 1940s silhouette, it's in autumn colouring but summer (and party) friendly with its gold flecks, flattering ruched short sleeves.

You could do gold peep-toe shoes, and find a really fabulous gold shimmer clutch to go with it.

lovelybittersquirrel · 25/05/2025 14:52

thanks all - i’ve ordered what i think is the last size 14 friends like these dress in the country i liked earlier. the blue phase 8 one is gorgeous too so i’m hovering putting that in my basket. whatever i go for i need a low heel (sky scraper days are over!) so fancying a kitten heel strappy sandal in silver or gold with matching clutch.
its hard work trying to scrub up nicely 😂

@Movinghouseatlast
it is indeed lovely but that colour palate would make me look like i was attending the party on my way out of this world.

If the ones you’ve ordered aren’t right, have a look at Ghost, their dresses are beautifully cut, so flattering.

lovelybittersquirrel · 28/05/2025 17:57

currently waiting in the green next one linked earlier to arrive.
i have some gold kitten sandals in my basket and watching a lovely vintage gold clutch bag on vinted. fingers crossed it all comes together a treat as i don’t have the brain space to keep this up!
