What are you taking please, and where are buying it from?

This one from Wild Nutrition. It's marine collagen rather than bovine. I've seen, and felt, a difference since I started using it about 5 months ago

Thank you! I have seen people say on here that there is no evidence that supplements work but chatGPT tells me that there is quite a lot of evidence that they do work in terms of improving skin firmness and elasticity, so I’m going to give it a go! Do you take anything else with them? I need help with my neck and upper arms, they look much older than my face 😬

I guess it depends what you are hoping to achieve by taking them. Collagen peptides have no proven link to hair growth or skin improvement. I use Wellguard, I use it for joint pain relief. I have pains that according to my GP may or may not be rheumatoid arthritis (as it's very hard to diagnose) the pain would be very significant during flare ups, but since taking collagen (January 2025) I very rarely have any noticeable pain at all which makes it well worth it for me. No effect whatsover on skin or hair.

If you want improved hair and skin, you want to be taking biotin. I see alot of people suggesting collagen despite no evidence it does anything for those, maybe they are confused with biotin. Biotin made a big difference to hair growth and nail strength for me, alongside zinc and iron.

I've been taking Solgar Collagen with Hyaluronic Acid on and off for about a month and think I can see I slight difference already. I'm going to buy another jar but £20+ for one month's worth is quite pricey long term so following for alternatives.

Trung · 24/05/2025 16:46

Bovine is what you need. Only one that works is Dose and Co. Others are useless. Mix it in to a juice or hot drink.

CombatBarbie · 24/05/2025 16:48

I didn't know my friend was using the nutrigeek powder. Weirdly this morning she posted a pic 4 weeks apart.....can definitely see the difference in her face/skin!

treesandsun · 24/05/2025 17:27

I take Willpowders Bovine Collagen - I orginally start with Ancient and Brave but that was more expensive for less product. Willpowders is high quality and compared to many others no additional ingredients. It is odorless and tasteless - I add it to my coffee but could you could add to food or just water.
I started taking it for bones/ hair/ nails and it has definitely helped with my knee pain.

I take this one. I feel like my skin does look better since I started taking it and hopefully it will ward off any joint pain as I head into the menopausal years.

helenjerome · 24/05/2025 17:40

I use Ancient and Brave, started off with the Wild Collagen (marine) and did see an improvement in my skin. But not my joints. Changed to True Collagen (bovine) and it’s really helped with joint pain in my hip (osteoarthritis). I don’t take any regular painkillers now just a couple of ibuprofen very occasionally. I’ll definitely keep on taking it.

@treesandsun how many grammes do you take a day? I’m taking Ancient & Brave since December but am getting it on a 6 week repeat so only taking 5g a da which doesn’t seem much. Have been researching other brands but haven’t settled on another brand yet so will look at Willpowders.

I have no idea how much it take because I don't measure it. They do a big, I think kilo bag now and that usually lasts me around a couple of months or more. I always put it in my coffees and usually put a couple of teaspoons per coffee and I have about three coffees in the morning . I move on to herbal tea later but often forget to put it in that but I usually put it in the herbal tea I take to bed and sometimes throw a bit in if I'm cooking something hot. I ran out and hadn't reordered so didn't have any for a couple of weeks and it was a not taking it that made me really notice a difference because my knee started twinging.

British Supplements Marine Collagen and Silica. To keep the cost down I'm only taking half a dose, but it's still working very nicely for me.

TomatoSandwiches · 24/05/2025 18:12

What's the difference between bovine and Marine collagen? Apart from their source of course.

CapitalAtRisk · 24/05/2025 18:12

Collagen supplements are a scam. The body does not absorb collagen. There is no collagen in hair or nails.

Happyinarcon · 24/05/2025 18:17

I took marine collagen in coffee for about 6 months and noticed no difference. Lately thought I have been making my own bone broth and drinking a mug a day and I have noticed a difference. I still have wrinkles, but my face seems to be plumper and a lot more hydrated. I don’t know if it’s the collagen or the fat content though, or maybe just the extra liquid consumption 🤷

The source is the main thing in terms of the willpowders one She talks about being able to trace the animals the grass fed et cetera whereas with the fish it's not possible to trace how ethical etc or the quality of what they've been eating . However if you're a non meat r eater but eat fish you might go for the marine one. the marine one apparently stinks too whereas the bovine one is odourless and tasteless.

Be careful with biotin supplements. They can interfere with lab tests, including those used to detect heart attacks.

Biotin supplements may interfere with test to diagnose heart attack - Harvard Health

Taking dietary supplements that contain high levels of biotin (vitamin B7) can lead to falsely low results on a blood test used to detect heart attacks....

Doesn't matter. The human body does not absorb collagen.

It's broken down into amino acids, not absorbed whole.

Studies show benefits for skin, joints, and hydration, but its not miracle cure. These studies collectively show that hydrolysed collagen or collagen peptides can: improve skin hydration and elasticity, reduce joint pain, help with muscle mass retention and support nail strength and reduce breakage. Clark et al. (2008) Proksch et al. (2014), Hexsel et al. Lugo et al. (2016) (2017), Zdzieblik et al. (2017)Choi et al. (2019)

CaptainSevenofNine · 24/05/2025 18:53

I take the Ancient and Brave bovine collagen. My knee pain is 90% reduced.

my nails are stronger.

that’s about all I’ve noticed but it’s worth it for the reduction in knee pain alone!

gamerchick · 24/05/2025 18:55

I use it for joint pain from hEDS and now peri. It's one of those things you don't notice that much until you've ran out of the stuff.

Made that mistake a couple of times.

If you're looking to reverse the signs of aging then you're probably expecting a lot.

Well, yes. Just take amino acids. Collagen is a scam, whethe it's bovine, fish, or pretendy vegan.

IchiNiSanShiGo · 24/05/2025 19:03

I’ve used MyProtein Clear Collagen and Nutrigeek Collagen Glow-Up. I can’t say I’ve noticed any difference in skin hair nails, but it’s made a massive difference to my clicky hip which now clicks far less than it used to. If I have a week or 2 where I don’t take it, the clicky hip clicks much more frequently.

Nutrigeek is better value for money, but I think the MyProtein was slightly more effective. Both were the bovine variety.
