Good day cream for sensitive skin?

Hi all, looking for suggestions for a day cream for sensitive skin - that’s not too pricey - please (I’m in my early thirties, with very fair and sensitive skin prone to redness).

I recently got into a skincare routine that seems to work well. However, I think my skin is getting a bit irritated - which I didn’t expect - by the La Roche Posay Toleriane day cream I use.

As an alternative, I’ve bought a small pot of the REN global protection day cream, so will give that a go and see if it helps with calming my skin’s redness. I’ve just found out today though that REN skincare is closing down, so now trying to scope out some alternative day creams I can try out 😭

Does anyone have any suggestions for water-based day creams that are good for sensitive skin, please? (Want to keep it water-based as my cleanser is water-based and I’m keen to avoid pilling!) Wondering if the Avene Tolerance day cream might suit potentially.

Thanks!

I’ve written my routine below:

AM: LRP Toleriane cleanser / Have been using LRP day cream, but looking to switch over the next few days to REN global protection day cream / Soltan sunscreeen SPF50

PM: LRP Toleriane cleanser / No7 protect and perfect serum LRP night cream / Exfoliate once a week with Indeed Labs powder exfoliator

shame about Ren skincare- I like their products. Try medik8 as another brand, or maybe l’occitane which I used to use when there was a branch near me.

Thanks @thedancingclown! I’ll have a look into those. I’m also wondering about trying the Aveeno oat gel moisturiser - has anyone on here tried that?

@Fandango52 I found the Aveeno oat gel to be not moisturising enough, but have had relative success with Avène Xeracalm A.D lipid replenishing balm. Comes in a big 200ml tube and consistency is like a thick cream, not typical balm. I use it with oil too.

Noshadelamp · 22/05/2025 20:18

I use cerave ceramides lotion and then sunscreen, or sometimes Clinique dramatically different lotion.

L'occitane irritates my skin.

Didn't know Ren was closing down, love their glow tonic!

My LRP regular day cream i realised had no spf. Assumed it would.
Switched to avene.

Happy Face by Beauty Pie. Absolutely fab, moisturising yet light and very soothing. Really recommend it OP!

Noshadelamp · 22/05/2025 20:22

Just remembered Byoma is also a nice range of barrier strengthening products.

Are you sure it's not your sunscreen irritating you? I can't wear any chemical sunscreen, only 100%mineral...
Otherwise, I use eucerin day and night cream, but the ones with no sunscreen!

CeraVe is good for repairing skin barrier - my skin can be quite reactive and I have tried loads of different skin care. I currently use CeraVe AM moisturiser SPF30 which is a lovely hydrating moisturiser and I’ve had had no negative issues

Antipodes rejoice is a great organic cream that’s been great for my sensitive skin. Really soothing and good for blemishes too - I think it’s vegan too. Really recommend giving it a try I was very surprised how good it is and have rebought it many many times!!

Fandango52 · 23/05/2025 09:06

Thanks so much all 😊 I’m really keen to try the creams you’ve mentioned here, especially if I can find small samples of them. I think I’ll buy the Avene tolerance soothing cream first and see what that’s like before trying the other ones you’ve suggested.

OP, have a look at the K beauty brand belif... I recently discovered the brand's aqua bomb range and it's amazing. My skin is also really sensitive and it's drinking the products up and feels so much smoother and less irritated. Particularly love the sleeping mask but the day cream is 👌

JoelenesParrot · 23/05/2025 14:01

Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic water-based day cream is life-changing for sensitive skin.

LoafofSellotape · 23/05/2025 15:07

I also find LRP too harsh and I have similar skin.

I use -

CeraVe LOTION ( better than the cream ime)
ELF holy hydration
Aveeno oat gel Calm and Restore
Moo Goo

There are many including la roche posay's moisturiser and spf50. So here is my routine that I follow with that:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
la roche posay spf
Evening:
la roche posay moisturizer,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel
