Is a sequin dress appropriate for a wedding guest?

Its midi in dark rust for an autumn wedding - simple shape, sleeveless and midi length.

Its a glam wedding of a young cool party couple - I am 48 and petite.

If so how would you style it - jacket / shoes - colour and material? It will be indoors - ceremony and reception in same venue.

Sounds ok for the milieu you describe!

And I’d style it with Autumn/Winter 2025 things that aren’t in the shops yet.

Is it the Roland Mouret one? It’s lovely and I would style it with dark grey rather than black.

No - its this one - actually a 2 piece. Dark grey is a good call. What style jacket would you wear?

That’s not a dress! Grin Do you mean the ankle length skirt and top?

Obviously it depends on your hair colour and skin tone, but for Autumn I’d be looking at these sorts of colour and fabric combinations. (So, nothing as straightforward as a grey jacket …)

And these: (just imagine the leopard skin (?) coat over rust coloured sequins).

Oooo just clicked the link, not wedding appropriate in my eyes

PinkGardenParty · 21/05/2025 12:14

As a combo I don't think it's particularly appropriate unfortunately. It's deffo more orange than rust and quite a glaring colour.

I think you could make the skirt work on its own with a gorgeous silk blouse in a more neutral color for the actual wedding but, then change into the matching top for the party bits.

LazyEyes · 21/05/2025 12:15

It's a bit 'trapeze artist' for a wedding.

Yes, the skirt might work well with a silk blouse.

A quick search brought this up which seems more wedding appropriate minus the boob hole.

Yeah something really sleek on top would look amazing and it'd be a quick change for the actual reception.

Even without the boob hole, I wouldn't consider that top suitable for a wedding!

Unless the theme was 'come dressed as a belly dancer!'

CapaciousHag · 21/05/2025 12:25

Are you planning to have the skirt shortened, @ellimae? It is a bit brighter (orange) than I’d imagined. A simple slip dress would be easier to integrate but I agree, the skirt alone could look beautifully ‘wedding guest’ with perhaps a sleeveless brown or red cashmere vest and a coat in an interesting fabric (see photos). Plus glossy block heeled loafers.

mummydoris2006 · 21/05/2025 12:39

The link you've posted seems to be at odds with your actual description?!

I'd go for a real rich brown or cream or something in the same sort of Autumnal palette like navy or burgundy.

Yes, distinct belly dancer vibe!

Idontjetwashthefucker · 21/05/2025 12:41

Yeah that's not a dress, nor is it rust, it's bright orange! It does seem a bit 'strictly', dare I say tacky...not sure where one would wear that to be fair

Thats a wonderful suggestion - I hadnt thought of a different fabric top. I didnt necessarily want head to toe sequin but was not imaginative enough as you to think of alternative tops - also eases my concern that both together could be too much in the day time at least.

@LazyEyes You took the words right out of my mouth! It’s an Ibiza outfit. If it’s a clubbing vibe - ok. Otherwise orange sequins and exposed bits - no.

FKAT · 21/05/2025 12:46

It looks like 00s Sienna Miller dressed by 00s Trinnie Woodall as a Tango sponsored tribute act to the Carry On Follow That Camel belly dancing scene. Needs a belly button jewel.

GoldDuster · 21/05/2025 12:46

That's an orange crop top and skirt combo, not a simple midi rust colured dress. If you've not got it already I think a sequinned dress fine for the event you describe, however there are other colours and shapes that would be easier to style.

TizerorFizz · 21/05/2025 13:00

Also just because a younger couple you think are “glam and cool” (?) , you don’t have to try and be them. Be you. I don’t see glen as being clubbing sequins either. It’s much more subtle than that.

PinkGardenParty · 21/05/2025 13:27

Crikey I'm not suggesting that exact top, just something similar. It was more an example of what I meant than an exact outfit suggestion!

BestDIL · 21/05/2025 13:33

Personally I wouldn't wear that to a wedding. It looks more like evening wear.

Doggymummar · 21/05/2025 13:47

Love it, it's stunning. I wouldn't wear it myself cos I don't have the body.
