Curl cream with "curl memory"??

Belmondo · 19/05/2025 16:59

Is there anything that all curly haired people agree on?! Is there a product that's universally recommended?? I'm so sick of trying things and giving up after a few months.

I have wavy on-top/ringlets-underneath hair, quite fluffy and a bit dry. I really like Davines Curl shampo and conditioner but am not a fan of their serum. I used Only Curls fragrance-free curl creme for a few years and more recently Windle curl cream - both are ok but I find the curls drop quickly, especially after sleeping on them (I wear a bonnet).

Is there anything that keeps your curls til the next day?! I don't even need it to be super-curly all over - I just want some consistent!

My curls sound similar. I use cantu curl cream. It’s the best I’ve found.

DoreenCorkhill · 19/05/2025 17:11

Loved Cantu but the pink boots curl cream that’s been around for decades & costs £2 takes a lot of beating . Trevor Sorbie used to do an amazing one about 20 years ago - discontinued & never found a replacement .

FlibbertyGibbitt · 19/05/2025 17:17

I do moose, gel, moose. I’ve stopped using curl cream, doesn’t seem to do anything on mine.

TheCurious0range · 19/05/2025 17:20

Boots pink curl creme, I comb coconut through my hair in the shower, rinse, squeeze but don't towel dry rub done of the curl creme through and scrunch , leave it to air dry this time of year or diffuse in winter I use Aussie curl serum once it's dry too tame the top frizz. I don't usually get more than a day or two between washes though I am a fidgety sleeper and often wake up with a birds nest

20YearsOuttaPractice · 19/05/2025 17:20

I've just dropped curl creme from my routine. I have very fine hair and my friend game me Lee Stafford Custard Creme for frizz. And the difference it has made is incredible! Just leave in conditioner and this and my curls look fab! A quick spritz with water to refresh in the morning and I'm done!

Tried the Boots one and it was far too heavy but I guess it depends on how much hair you have

Agree with trying loads of different products. It's a pain in the arse!

Yogaandcrochet · 19/05/2025 17:21

You mention cream, but perhaps try a gel or a hairspray? It sounds like you need something with hold, which curl creme usually doesn't have.

EveryDayisFriday · 19/05/2025 17:31

I've been watching lots of curly hair tiktoks, they recommend gel scrunching when wet then hair plopping and leave to "cast" and air dry. Glide through some oil and scrunch through to "uncrunch" the gel.

I have wavy hair and need to get some old school gel to give this a try. I have mousse and creams but they don't seem to last long.

Agree which is why it sells out in minutes at my local Boots infuriatingly

@Belmondo Umberto Giannini curl jelly is very good. It's stronger than cream but not as strong as a gel I would imagine, definitely not a strong as the Boots pink curl gel, and smells lovely imo. It works best on my hair when it's closer to shoulder length and gives me amazing curls.
I'm currently loving Cantu curl cream in a big orange tub which I bought on offer in Waitrose.
I also use John Frida Curl cream and I tend to use that when I'm not styling my hair as such but don't want the frizz.
I have tried Noughty curl defining taming cream and am not sure about it. It's very thick and I find it difficult to scrunch through my hair.

TaggieO · 19/05/2025 21:56

Always boots pink cream!

Belmondo · 19/05/2025 22:12

Thanks all, much appreciated!

I used the Boots pink cream years ago but it was never my.holy grail - I find it quite heavy and my hair's got finer over the years.

I used mousse for years when I had a lot more hair and needed a lot more hold, but I haven't found the right one in recent years.

Someone mentioned hairspray - definitely not what my curls need but thank you!

I'm quite well versed in CG and always squish to condish, apply product to sopping hair, squeeze out excess with pillowcase etc. I can get a cast and good definition but my problem is that it drops quickly and after a night sleeping on it, my hair's a weird mix of straightish, messy ringlets and just plain sad 😁

I just run wet hands through my hair on day 2 and it seems to reactivate the styling product - which is usually cantu or the Umberto Gianni curl jelly mentioned above. Sometimes I put a tiny bit more on (usually rubbed into palms with some water first to make it less sticky as it's going onto dryish hair).

Rednotdead · 20/05/2025 18:24

My hair sounds the same as yours, I use Curlsmith weightless air dry cream.

Fancyateapottea · 20/05/2025 22:03

My hair doesn’t do well with curl creams. It’s much better since I’ve started using the only curls mousse and their strong hold gel. I scrunch out the crunch using a serum (nicest I’ve found are kerastase elixir and John frieda dream curls). Once the gel cast is out it doesn’t feel like I have product on my hair. I use water and a bit more mousse the next day.

DoreenCorkhill · 24/05/2025 10:42

Just tried the Aussie curl cream and impressed . Good hold no stickiness . Also ordered the products recommended by hairdresser Michael Douglas in this months Woman & Home mag . Will experiment with those too .

Belmondo · 29/05/2025 13:03

Thanks for the updates all - I've used the pink Boots cream for a couple of weeks now and although it looks good after washing, the curl drops very quickly for me.

I haven't tried any Curlsmith stuff but might see if I can get a travel size - bloody expensive business having curly hair!!

i use dr paw paw 7 in 1 style cream in yellow bottle then lush curl power then cantu wave whip on my shoulder length wavy hair. It’s the only combo that reduces the frizz for me. I have thick wavy hair

NewToAllThisStuff · 29/05/2025 22:11

I HAVE to wash (well, condition) every day. A spritz the next day does nothing for my hair unfortunately. I’m like a wet dog every day as I air dry too 😭

CapabilityBrownsHaHa · 29/05/2025 22:20

I like Cantu curl activator, and have been known to scrunch a bit more through on day 3 to re-activate and condition the ends.

Uricon2 · 29/05/2025 22:22

A silk sleep bonnet extends life between washes, stops tangling and frizz quite a bit.

Haha me too - soaking wet hair for half the morning every day!

NotSmallButFunSize · 31/05/2025 13:59

I use Umberto Giannini curl whip and jelly on wet hair, diffuse, break the gel cast and that usually gives me good hold for a couple of days.

I find the better you can create the curls on wash day, the longer they last

UG curl jelly is the best imo, and I’ve tried lots.
