Foundation in your mid-40s. Help please!

I need to switch something up - I've always used liquid foundation, and I like the coverage but I've noticed recently it's quite cakey and claggy almost as soon as I put it on so I think liquid is not working for me anymore as my skin ages.

Any recommendations of good products I could use instead?

I swear by elf

It gives me a lovely coverage but very smooth and glowy finish

I am 45 and this year, I've stopped wearing foundation.

I have a Clinique CC cream if I'm going out or want a more made-up look, but I've really focussed instead on taking care of my skin and specifically wearing a Korean sunscreen with a light glow/ shimmer effect.

For me, I honestly think it looks better.

I’m in early-mid 40s and I’ve also stopped wearing foundation pretty much. I use Eborian CC instead and often get complimented on it. I also make sure my skin is well hydrated, drink lots of water and try to get a good amount of sleep which all helps!

theemmadilemma · 17/05/2025 13:17

Stop and focus on skincare.

RK800 · 17/05/2025 13:20

I’m using Milk Hydro Grip Gel Tint and I really like it. I don’t wear much makeup but it gives me a nice even glow without being too shiny.

I'm 47 and no longer wear foundation. I have rosacea and get very red, so I use the Erborian Super BB cream which massively tones down the redness and evens out my skin tone. It's quite pricey at around £40 for a small tube, but you don't need much and it lasts for ages. It's also quite glowy.

Stop and focus on skincare.

Why ? Let her do what she wants

Catwoman8 · 17/05/2025 17:41

I used to use charlotte tilbury foundation but I started to find it so thick and cakey and I hated how it felt on my skin. I switched to no 7 hydraluminous about a year ago,and I love it. it's liquid but it feels really light and just like skin. I use it on days when my skin breaks out for that little bit of coverage. I also like pixi skin H20 skin tint which again just gives a very light coverage.

fatgirlswims · 17/05/2025 21:29

Same as the others!skin care plus one of the following- eborian CC, Estée Lauder Daywear sheer tint or No 7 hydraluminous

what do you currently use?

Scottishgirl85 · 17/05/2025 21:32

It's all very well saying stop wearing foundation, but please pity those of us who still have spots at nearly 40 :-(

Mrsmouse71 · 17/05/2025 21:32

Laura Gellar do baked foundation powder which is really good for mature skin

I have just switched to this and really like it. For more coverage I like clarins everlasting youth.

User37482 · 17/05/2025 21:39

I use dior face and body, it’s quite thin but highly pigmented. Usually do a bit of concealer and pop it on over a well moisturised face.

GreenWriter · 17/05/2025 21:40

I’m 48 and use not a foundation but a tinted moisturiser by Nars, highly recommended by Sali Hughes. I love it and it hydrates, aswell as making skin appear more even, so is worth the money. You could build extra coverage on any problem areas with a good concealer?
I focus on skincare routine and skincare products more so than makeup, so only really use this if I’m going out or whatever.

Fitzcarraldo353 · 17/05/2025 21:43

I started a similar thread on here a little while ago and apart from upping skincare a bit someone recommended the Trinny one which I tried and love..

I was going to suggest this too!
...Baked Balance & Brighten (in a compact)
QVC

RampantIvy · 17/05/2025 21:50

I agree that as we get older less is more. I use Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser instead of foundtion.

Traveller2025 · 18/05/2025 06:43

I use Nars light reflecting foundation which I find really subtle. I’m older than you (56) but been using for years. In my mid-40s I sometimes just used Boots No7 BB cream which I liked. I have a few more blemishes now so add a bit of the foundation. I like the Nars creamy concealer too.

Sparkletastic · 18/05/2025 06:51

Try Erborian or Lisa Eldridge Skin Tint

suki1964 · 18/05/2025 06:54

Im older and Ive switched to Laura Gellar and love it

The baked balance and brighten isnt full coverage but it evens out and brightens

I have had compliments along the lines of - you are looking so well lately - since Ive been using it because its not obvious Im wearing a foundation.

Thedandelionshavewon · 18/05/2025 06:57

I like Trinny skin perfect and tinted serum. I use a concealer on the spots that need extra.

moleeye · 18/05/2025 06:58

I’m 45 and switched to tinted moisturiser years ago, I think foundation is too heavy and ages me. Currently using Hourglass veil which I love.

A good skincare routine, spf and water is essential though

Didntask · 18/05/2025 06:59

What kind of coverage do you want? I haven't worn foundation for 30 years (just concealer where needed), but as I've got older I find a do need something to even out skin tone etc. I like Trinnys BFF, but I've also just discovered NYX Soft Glow Skin Tint. Both lovely, both with SPF30, but at different ends of the budget scale.
