Foundation in your mid-40s. Help please!

I need to switch something up - I've always used liquid foundation, and I like the coverage but I've noticed recently it's quite cakey and claggy almost as soon as I put it on so I think liquid is not working for me anymore as my skin ages.

Any recommendations of good products I could use instead?

I use Trinny's BB SPF 30 cream and work it with a soft round brush. It suits me at 73 and doesn't sit in wrinkles - gives me a little luminous lift that still feels age appropriate.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 18/05/2025 08:14

Another recommendation for the erborian cc cream for every day wear. I have the Clair shade and mix in some Dore, particularly in the summer when I’ve got a bit more colour.

I still revert to the Chanel ultra la teint velvet for more evening/dress up type events. It’s very light and best applied with finger tips.

I have been experimenting a bit with my base - tried the erborian bb cream (a bit heavy for me just now, but I might keep it to try in the winter again). I tried the rms super tint - far too heavy for me. The Milk tint mentioned by previous posters is top of my list to try next.

Springtime97 · 18/05/2025 08:20

I use the elf one as above.

you could try using a primer under your current foundation and see if that helps?

Birdsongsinging · 18/05/2025 08:28

Following this but unfortunately most of these recommendations are not cruelty free products - Erborian, Chanel, Nars. Laura Geller and Charlotte Tilbury are.

LoafofSellotape · 18/05/2025 08:31

You'll have to prise EL DW out of my cold dead hands but I have changed the way I apply it as I have got older.

*I use the EL watery glow primer.

*I tap the foundation onto the back of my hand and dab it with a buffing brush

*Use it really sparingly like a concealer.

I have tried tons of other foundations but none compare although I have just ordered the sheer version so I'll see how that works.

Giddykiddy · 18/05/2025 08:50

Another vote for Eborian / i use their Cc cream during the day and BB if I'm going out. Both have SPF and can be applied blind folded

throwaway25 · 18/05/2025 09:00

Erborian CC here too. Sometimes mix a drop or two of the BB in with it for a bit more coverage. The CC on its own is brilliant though - mid 40s here as well and it just suits this age of skin I think!

GeorgianaM · 18/05/2025 09:14

I just use any of my foundations but add a couple of drops of liquid highlighter and it gives a radiant finish, doesn’t settle in pores, feels light on the skin and gives a fresh and youthful glow.

Fedupwithneighbours · 18/05/2025 09:43

I also like the Clinique CC cream. The lightest shade of erborian was too dark for me and make me look shiny. But I do like their green tinted one for rosacea. A bit of that over my red bits followed by the Clinique works really well for me

also I stopped using powder and blot any shine with blotting sheets now. Stops my skin getting as clogged

Laura Gellar do baked foundation powder which is really good for mature skin

Seconding this! It’s buildable so can wear as little or as much as you like.

Itisallabitvague · 18/05/2025 08:02

Which one please?

Nars Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturiser.
I find the colour match perfect (& I bought online) & it’s also SPF30. Personally I don’t need a separate day moisturiser when I use this.
I used a Benefit primer years ago
which was also good.
I’d be interested in trying some of the other reccs on here too.

Bourbonbonbon · 18/05/2025 16:12

I use something called photoface which is like a clear primer and then a mixture of No 7 beauty balm (they're calling it something different now but it's like a very light foundation) mixed with a little clear BB cream. The photoface jeans you don't need very much of the others. I actually do think it's worth persisting with foundation into your forties but you need to be prepared to use a sensibly small amount.

knackeredcat · 18/05/2025 16:17

49, with oily/sensitive/rosacea skin, and Purito cica clearing BB cream is the best for me. Foundation looks too heavy now, this is buildable and gives a nice glow. I just dab a bit extra on the broken capillaries and under the eyes, and set with a light dusting of Nyx powder.

PineForestsSmellGood · 18/05/2025 16:19

Is your skin wrinkled?

I'm asking because 47 is very young. You should still be able to use foundation!
My Mum's in her 90s and still uses foundation- one of Boots No 7.

I like Bobbi Brown Weightless Skin Foundation which comes in around 42 shades. I'm in my 60s.

It's all about prep- lots of moisturiser, then sun block, then foundation.
You might find using a good foundation brush helps to spread it lightly.

FloraBotticelli · 18/05/2025 16:25

I’m a little younger but have definitely been finding foundation looks cakey and drying lately. So instead of looking for full coverage to hide everything, I now lean towards lighter, sheer, dewy coverage with a concealer.

I’m liking Estée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue.

TBH you must be using the wrong foundation. I've never found any cakey, except one by Clinique that was aimed at combination/ oilier skin which I tried (mine's not oily)

I’m 15 years older than you and have never been keen on wearing foundation but I love love love No7 Intelligent Colour. So much so that I’m terrified they may stop making it so I am on a mission to make sure that everyone uses it!
I also have tried the Jones Road which I like too.

beanparcel · 17/05/2025 13:09

It gives me a lovely coverage but very smooth and glowy finish

I was about to recommend this! I'm in my early 50s and am done with foundation. It makes my skin look dull.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/05/2025 16:47

Sorry- I was quoting the post about Elf but you can't see that in my post!

Gingefringe · 18/05/2025 16:53

Another vote for Erborian here. I use the CC and also have the super BB - both are excellent. You can get 15ml sizes on Amazon for around £15, so you can see what they're like. I also love Chanel CC cream - very expensive at £50 but it's amazing and a tube lasts ages as you only need a tiny bit.

Lins77 · 18/05/2025 16:58

Another vote for the Laura Geller.

For liquid foundation I like YSL Touche Éclat, but it's not the cheapest. Then again nor is the Laura Geller.

I love the light texture of this, but the lightest shade is too dark for me.

1990s · 18/05/2025 20:22

I find concealer really sits in my lines and kind of coagulates on the bits that need covering, any recommendations?

Icebreakhell · 18/05/2025 20:38

I use Haus Labs. It’s a serum like consistency, very light.

Bookoholic · 18/05/2025 22:01

I am 45 next week. I use Estée Lauder hydra rescue foundation, which another poster also recommended. I really like it, it has a high SPF and is very hydrating. It has good coverage but leaves my skin quite dewy and not dry or caked! They will match your colour at EL make-up stand and give you a sample to try first.
