50th (mine) casual party

Help! Please. I have my birthday party on Saturday - I had an outfit chosen (Kemi Telford skirt and a boxy cropped top) but my lovely DMiL has just given me a super generous birthday gift if £150 and I’m wondering if I could look more fabulous. I’d need to order something for next day delivery as I’m working today and tomorrow and Saturday morning will be busy.

I’m 5’6’ 12 on the bottom 10 on top, no boobs to speak off. I like Toast, Cos and Kemi Telford but nothing on any of them is crying out to me. I usually wear wide leg trousers and tops, the occasional jumpsuit and have two maxi skirts - but would love a dress. Anyway - what is your style? I always think a beautiful shirt dress works for nearly everyone, teamed with espadrilles and a straw bag. Boden have some good ones or look for stripes. Can be dressed up with gold jewellery. My other go to is well cut linen trousers. Not baggy beach ones but ones that are lined with a good cut. Then a silk shirt that’s a pop of colour.

@Enterthewolves, while it’s a generous gift, I’m not sure you’re going to find anything significantly more celebratory, but good quality, at that price point. You could have a look at

Sister Jane as J.Lewis stocks a selection of pieces.

Or you could put the money towards hair / make up / shoes / perfume - which will all contribute to your birthday look.

(I don’t think the dress you’ve linked is anything close to my idea of party wear.)

I think your original outfit sounds much better than something like that dress. I’d spend the money on a pair of earrings, or out towards some shoes instead.

Thank you all. I love that Boden dress and wound never have thought of looking there. You’re right though - maybe just being happy with what I have is a good lesson (she says hovering over the Boden dress 🙂)

I agree. The Tina Fey dress is pretty enough but there's no wow to it, which the Kemi Telford will have. I don't even have to see it.

I don’t know which Kemi Telford outfit you’ve chosen but I really like some of the stuff on her website and I don’t think anything that’s been suggested outshines them. I might spend the money ‘upgrading’ to a more expensive Kemi Telford though! Or maybe shoes (but I’m very fussy about shoes and I’d never be able to choose in a day).
