Help! Miami evening style?

Jungfraujoch · 12/05/2025 21:35

Lost my clothes mojo no clue where to start! Need 2 evening outfits - one for an outside reception at a 5 star hotel. And the other for dinner out in Miami then back to the hotel for an industry awards type after party. 5ft 6, size 14/16, want to disguise tummy and upper arms! Budget up to £300 ish for both.

What industry? Construction or hair and beauty!

Hi OP- I will get started and I am sure people will jump in with other ideas.

For one outfit, I would be inclined to start with white trousers- palazzo style would be cool. I would add a box tee silk style top in either an electric orange, pink, blue or green, depending on your colouring. If bright is too much for your skin tone, go for a Miami pastel shade of pink, blue or lilac. For shoes and bag I suggest pale metallics because these would serve as a neutral and could easily be reused. A low thong heel with square toe for the shoe and an envelope style bag. One could be gold and the other silver. I wouldn’t worry about matching them. I would keep jewellery simple and not have a statement necklace or anything like that.

For the other outfit I would go maxi or mini, depending on if you want to show your legs off, and reuse your metallic accessories.

Great ideas thank you! I’m thinking maxi dress as awaiting op on ankle which is swollen and heat makes it worse!

I cannot get on with them at all - but love other people in jumpsuits.
You could defo get away with a wide legged, crepe one.
i like the other suggestion too.

Well, white wide leg trousers are a no! Tried several pairs and they just dont suit! I have black linen but theyre not so ‘smart’. So its either a dress or jumpsuit i think- if anyone can suggest anything i’d be very grateful!

have you got a lovely kimono style / silky / statement jacket? I might go for smart ish jumpsuit with a lovely kimono (I bought a gold sequinned batwing edge to edge jacket a few years ago which I wear all the time, with everything)
and a black cocktail dress ‘jazzed up’ with lovely statement shoes and matching accessories? Maybe a corsage for the awards?

Side note you didn’t ask for: I went to Miami in November. I have rock solid frizz-free hair.

There I was Monica in Barbados.

So you may want to think about hairstyles too!

I have just posted my own thread that I really want this Zara skirt but am too short for it - maybe it would be good for your event?

Although I find people in Miami wear few colours or patterns so you would stand out as a Brit - could be a good thing! They tend to wear plain, skimpy dresses with strappy sandals in my experience.m

Love that! I’m definitely not a skimpy dress kinda girl!

The advice about bright colours and patterns is spot on.

Muted is the way to go in the US. You can't go wrong with black, and it won't show up sweaty patches.

For an awards dinner, tailored lightweight cigarette pants, heels, silk or silky looking top, and a jacket would work well. Or a maxi dress in a muted colour.

Thank you. I must admit black is often my go too but seeing all the floral and patterned dresses in shops mostly fill me with dread! There doesn’t seem a lot thats just plain.
