I'm in Scotland and we were charged for any single use bags already whether paper or plastic. I'm sure paper bags are at least 40p in Morrison's

TennesseeStella · 09/05/2025 19:24

As PP said in Scotland we have been paying for them for years! I try and remember to take my own bags with me.

Calmdownpeople · 09/05/2025 19:25

Good. Take your own bags.

dementedpixie · 09/05/2025 19:27

I have my bag of bags in my car for shopping trips. I rarely have to buy a new one. Take your own bags if you don't want to pay for a paper one

legsekeven · 09/05/2025 19:28

I thought they did already! I’m not in Scotland

StMarie4me · 09/05/2025 19:38

We always take our own or buy a big white one. They’re awesome, like an Ikea Blue Bag!

Surroundedbyfools · 09/05/2025 19:43

Im in Scotland so all bags are charged for. Quite frankly I think it’s ridiculous. Started at 5p now it’s like 40p. Sometimes I just click no bags as I just think it’s ridiculous. Fully aware someone’s going to bash me on here for “stealing” and destroying the planet, still don’t care

itispersonal · 09/05/2025 19:47

The bag fee was meant to be a plastic tax. If the bag is made of paper and can be recycled then they shouldn’t be charging for a bag.
it’s easy money for primark as young adults / teens aren’t going to be going shopping with a carrier bag!

Gingercatlover · 09/05/2025 19:52

H&M charge for paper bags too.

Not until after they've been stopped by Security and accused of shoplifting three times because they don't have a Primark bag, at any rate.

The argument we used to have for charging for paper bags was that they cost more to produce in terms of money and energy than plastic, but then they were cheaper because they were potentially biodegradable/wouldn't be around for five thousand years choking turtles.

I miss the decent hessian bags more. Managed to get a couple recently that were so small in comparison, but the previous ones lasted about 15 years.

In Scotland we're charged 10p for McDonald's paper bags! I always thought it was to discourage you buying more plastic and bring your own and if they charged it was for a bag that can be reused, not a greasy chip bag that falls apart 🤣

squarepegroudhole · 09/05/2025 20:17

Yep. Scotland charges and has done for a long time. That includes paper bags from Primark, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons etc.

Well maybe they should learn to take a bag. There are gazillions of bags which fold up and can easily be put in a pocket/ rucksack etc. It's really not difficult.

Regardless of whether they can or can’t take a bag. It isn’t what the tax was for- it was to stop plastic waste, save the oceans. Not for paper bags which are already recycled and can be again.

Regardless of whst the tax was for it's wasteful of resources to create , use , dispose and possibly recycle a one use paper bag. I don't have much sympathy for the idea that anyone old enough to be able to buy their own clothes is incapable of taking a bag with them.

HiddenInCubeOfCheese · 10/05/2025 08:49

Also, it’s a bit bloody rich coming from Primark - fast fashion slowly decomposing in landfills.

I agree with a PP about not paying for some bags. Yeah, it’s stealing…but then M&S and all the rest of them can remove their absurd packaging from grapes, figs, apples etc etc. On a tangent, ripping off the consumer for 40p is just an obvious joke when corporations/countries are burning fossil fuels like nobody’s business.

Knickle · 30/05/2025 14:02

Yes they charge for the paper bag and not for the plastic hangers that your welcome to take. 😆

Giftser · 30/05/2025 14:06

I was charged for a bag in England a few weeks ago.
