Having weird issues with fake tan (images)

I use Bondi Sands and have for 2 years. I use the same technique, with a mitt and the regular foam for light/medium skin.

I don't over use or over layer, and I use on clean, smooth skin like I always did.

But for a while now it seems to pool and patch, into speckles and in some areas it literally acts as if none has been applied. I am very even and apply in natural light.

This never used to happen, and nothing I do has altered. I have no skin issues, my life and health and pores are the same, and I use same products. I have troubleshot it over and again online with no answer.
Previously the tan was smooth, no patches or pooling, and lasted ages. Now it lasts a much shorter time and even a tiny drop of water brings it off. However, if I try to scrub off in the bath, it's a nightmare lol.

It just fees like a waste of money at this point.

Maybe it’s an out of date bottle ?

StarTwirl · 08/05/2025 17:23

I’d return the bottle and get a refund

MicroCrisis · 08/05/2025 22:20

Not sure!
This has happened over time, over about a year, and I have bought the bottles from various places. They appear to be legit (Boots, Superdrug, etc).

I wondered if they had altered the ingredients, have no idea why it seems not to work anymore.

I know some of the dots seem like pores but they're actually not - I have gone in with a macro lens and checked lol. It is as if it pools in areas, flat areas as opposed to creases or knees. Knees and elbows are great!

Aaagh, I might have to shop around which is a pain in the arse.

This has happened to me with another brand. Someone told me it’s because I need to exfoliate the skin between applications. Hasn’t been an issue since.

MicroCrisis · 08/05/2025 22:29

Interesting, I have never done that and it worked perfectly for years. I do shave legs only (don't have much body hair) and apply aveeno about an hour or 2 before. It always worked ok.

I have experimented without using aveeno, both shaving and not shaving, and this is just happening regardless.

The weirdest thing is that after 6 hours of a good coating, it seems to just wash off and not leave a good colour like it used to do.

Looks like it has gone off. How old is it?

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 09/05/2025 06:28

It may be that your skin is just dryer than it used to be. Like the previous poster, I would recommend exfoliating and moisturising well before applying.

CeciliaMars · 09/05/2025 06:40

I think you’ve just layered it on too many times. Have a really good exfoliate and moisturise one night then try again.

Skibbidirizzohio · 09/05/2025 06:46

Might be the mit, I use latex/plastic gloves. It’s a game changer!

Doggymummar · 09/05/2025 06:50

I have one that's been open since last Summer and it's a bit patchy. They have a video that recommends exfoliating and applying moisturizer the night before. If you moisturise you are creating a barrier to the cream getting to your skin so I wouldn't do that.

dollyblue01 · 09/05/2025 06:52

I use this but exfoliate a few hours or the night before, shower , moisturiser, then apply 20 mins later, goes on well, also let if fully dry for 20 mins before getting dressed.

Laiste · 09/05/2025 10:37

Mine looks like that if we've had a long summer (! remember those?) and i've layered too much over the weeks without a damn good exfoliation. I would exfoliate, leave it a couple of days, exfoliate again and start again as if it was spring session and the patchyness would go away.

If you've done all that and it's not helping you'll have to find yourself another brand which suits you OP. Our skin changes over time.

Booksandwine80 · 09/05/2025 10:46

You’re supposed to shave legs the day before application. The day of application is just exfoliate and put a tiny bit of lotion in dry areas like ankle/knee.

I’ve got a new bottle of bondi sands arriving today so will see if I notice any difference in the formula.

MicroCrisis · 12/05/2025 21:14

Thanks everyone, had not checked back in to see comments.

I had showered and shaved the day before and lightly moisturised.
For this attempt I used a brand new mitt.
It was a new can from Boots.

I apply liberally but lightly so do not go over and over.
It was all from scratch so had no residue of old application on my skin.

Sadly this just seems to happen now, and it never used to.
I am doing the exact same routine but having these issues.

Wish I could work it out!

This batch washed off ok, and the dots vanished to leave a decent but light colour.
Within 24 hours I have a bright white patch across my neck.

You just can't win really no matter how careful!

I’m a beautician and my top 3 tans are Bellamantia (goes on like a dream), mine tan and Bali Body. Might save you having to shop around OP as I was a bondi sands girl for years

Booksandwine80 · 13/05/2025 07:15

I used my new bottle of bondi sands on Friday night, went on as usual and is lasting well with exfoliating and plenty of moisturiser. Maybe it’s reacting to something on your skin?

MicroCrisis · 13/05/2025 12:54

It used to be foolproof so no idea why it's gone off for me.

The most irritating thing at the moment is a huge white patch on the front of my neck. No idea what removed it there as no memory of anything in particular (no rubbing, scratching of applications etc) but since it won't just scrub off easily I am stuck with it.

I wondered if they had altered the formula.

If anyone knows if it is possible to re-patch the white bit ....
