Can’t find ANY clothes to suit my body!

Verbena17 · 02/05/2025 13:25

Having a nightmare - worse than most springs when I’m worrying about the summer and what to wear.
My body is not great and I’m also currently feeling like I’ve gone off every single possible item of clothing there is out there!

So traditionally, I’m a pear shape but in recent years I’ve being just plain round!
I’m pinning a photo of what I think my body looks like but I have less fat on top of thighs, bum and back. Pretty sure though I have lipoedema so I have large arm tops and my knees have too much weight around them.

My thighs are large and my calves are too. And now, it’s not just a tummy pooch I’ve got, it’s the top of the tummy under my bust too! So from the side, to me it looks like my cross section from tummy to bum is huge! For that reason, I don’t like wearing dresses.
I used to be curvy but I now I just feel blob-like.

Any good ideas for hiding (everything)?
I live in jeans and basic plain tops with 3/4 length sleeves.
There are some pretty tops about but none look or feel right to me.
I order stuff online then send everything back.
I’m currently a size 18, sometimes 16 in looser tops.

I usually shop at Next, Fatface, Weirdfish (tops too short) Seasalt etc but I’m not really loving of their stuff this spring.
The other issue is I don’t work and so I’m at home mostly doing house work and walking the dog. That’s basically it so apart from the odd meal out now and again, I don’t need anything super lovely. I just want to look slightly better put together and not as boring. I don’t like patterns or colours that would make me stand out - I’m an introvert for sure! I just want to blend in but look nice, so nobody thinks blimey, what’s she wearing!?

I like wearing loose, comfy trousers that are well cut and hang nicely but I can’t find any. The wide leg trousers actually make me look bigger I think and the ankle grazers cut off my not particularly long legs. I’m about 5ft 5”.
Help! 😂😬 any ideas?

They have some nice stuff - I like their cropped linen trousers as I think they’d be more ankle grazer than cropped on me. But think they only do up to size 16

@Todayismyfavouriteday why do you think that ‘boring-dull’ clothes are ‘suitable for older women’? Bizarre. I’m older, I don’t want dull clothes, thanks, why would I?

Good on you. I will never wear dull clothing, even when I'm ninety. I love bright colours, eclectic, jazzy clothes, and I've always been told I have great style and flair - which I intend to keep at any age. I hope you, and many other women, dress as they like regardless of age!
What I meant to say is, that dull, plain clothing is often associated with the traditional 'older women' look. Not that older women should adopt it.

OP @Verbena17 When one posts here asking for opinions - specifically, on how to look less boring -one should be willing to accept them! You don't have to agree, by the way. If I love a piece of clothing, even if everyone else criticised it, I'd still wear it happily- I know exactly what I want to wear, and how I want to look. It's called self esteem.

AnotherNaCha · 08/05/2025 11:52

Look for long cotton kaftan style dresses with long sleeves and a deep v neck (to elongate). Zara is good or search John Lewis online

The first two are not very attractive, and would make you look older - the third, striped one is ok.

I know what you’re saying but I literally said I had recently bought these tops, meaning I liked them. You said the ones I liked, bought & kept weren’t attractive.
I just think you’re perhaps a straight forward, tell-it-how-it-is type person, which I kind of wasn’t expecting when I posted the new stuff I actually liked.

Sorry, it was not my intention to make you feel bad, and yes, I am pretty straightforward, especially when someone is asking for opinions. If you like them, by all means wear them regardless of what I, or anyone else, may say. You should wear whatever you feel good in. Just like I do.

Verbena17 · 08/05/2025 14:17

Thanks for understanding.
I find it hard to have self esteem but at the same time, I’m not really bothered about what other people think I look like. I’m bothered myself about how look and feel.

I’m literally just reading another post about someone whose life has been changed through using a personal stylist. https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5327737-personal-stylist-has-changed-my-life?utm_campaign=thread&utm_medium=share
might be worth looking at responses. Good luck

Personal Stylist has changed my life | Mumsnet

Back in October I saw a personal stylist for the very first time. It was a real investment, not cheap (it was at selfridges). I got some amazing cloth...

Thing is, a personal stylist might say ‘oh that looks great on you’ and I would still be thinking my legs look huge or I look awful or whatever.

I’m way too shy/introverted to organise a PS - I’m barely wanting to enter a changing room, let alone have a PS who doesn’t know me help me sort my clothes out.
thanks for the suggestion though 😊

They wouldn't though @Verbena17 , they'd start by asking you which bits you like and don't like about your body. If you say you want to hide your legs, they'll bring you clothes that hide your legs. Their literal job is to find clothes you WANT to buy, not to tell you what you should buy.

Totally understand if you don't want to put yourself out there, but when I gave it a bash it was very different to what I think you are imagining.

Not your intention to make someone feel bad. Right. Perhaps think before you post next time? There is a huge difference
between someone posting and asking for advice and opinions before they buy an item than when they post sharing something they have just bought and like.

Thanks @TunipTheVegimal24 thanks, they’re really lovely so I’ll have a look at those.

Hello again.

Thought I'd report back - my order from Buddha Stones has arrived. Took a year and a day as came straight from China, which I hadn't realised.

I had high hopes, but sadly the items aren't fantastic. Not terrible like Temu. But not as nice as they looked online. The material for two of the three items is actually okay. Third one is all shiny and weird. Shirt could benefit from being an inch longer, that sort of thing.

blueleavesgreensky · 02/05/2025 15:09

What do you mean shaped like a woman? We come in all shapes and sizes and not everyone looks bad in today’s clothes.

I think it's just the usual thin hating post, or having to put down anyone who isn't overweight to make herself (that poster not the op) feel better. So it's easier to say someone with a small bust isn't a woman. It's allowed apparently , you can't fat shame obviously but if you are slim and heaven forbid flat chested then that's fair game.

Sorry op to derail your post.

I am five foot three, 8stone 8/9 and a size 6/8 and I have still today woken up feeling very fat and bloated. My clumsy point is it's in my head like it's in yours that you don't look right. My mum was mental about her weight, always on diets and was never more delighted than when, aged 18 i lost about a stone on a no sleep/no food lots of booze clubbing holiday, i was probably about 9 1/2 stone at my biggest.

Thoughts aren't facts!

Thanks - yes I did look but just got weird vibes from the website, as well as the sizing, and so didn’t order.

Not sure I would - maybe trousers and top but generally no. And definitely not a bright colour - although that set does look nice but very bright. A navy one perhaps.
