Summer hat for large heads?

Icanneverthinkofausername · 02/05/2025 10:04

I've never been a hat person but after loosing all my hair to chemo I thought I'd better protect my scalp this summer as it doesn't have the cover it used to.
Also want to protect my face from the sun.
But my head is big, whenever I wear a hat for my than ten minutes it starts to hurt.
Please help!

Totally with you on this. I’ve found it v hard over the years to get a “straw summer hat” type hat that fits my head - found one by pure chance on holiday a couple of years ago and I treasure it.
But if you’d consider a more “outdoor wear” type of hat, I’d recommend looking in Millets or similar - they have lightweight uv protective wide brimmed hats and they usually come in S/M and M/L or you can look at the men’s ones. I’ve got this in khaki:

it’s really comfy. Probably worth trying on a few of the wider brimmed ones, maybe paler colours for the summer - could add a ribbon or band if you want!

Beige Peter Storm Unisex Jungle Ranger II Hat

This wide brimmed Jungle Ranger II Hat from Peter Storm is ideal for your outdoor activities - lightweight and foldable, which makes is perfect when travelling.

I have a big head and I’ve found some nice hats in Tescos and H&M, they often do different sizes.

Eg this one https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1221878002.html

Ive had a few black hats like this over the years, they were good when I was on accutane and needed to keep the sun off my face as well.

I buy men’s straw/summer hats from marks and Spencer/zara/H&M each year. Much nicer colour range and same style other than the massive floppy ones.

Try caps and hats from the men's department. Men tend to have larger heads!

Here's one from Decathlon and it comes in different sizes (for example)...

What often annoys me is that it seems far more common for men’s hats to have a choice of sizes, but women’s hats are much more commonly “one size fits all”.

Great to see all these options though.

I am so sorry to hear about your hair.

I also have a big head, massive in fact (size 62). If your head is just a bit big try men's hats from highstreet stores like M&S or Gap where a men's one size is bigger than a woman's.

Alternatively there is an Amazon shop especially for hats for large heads. Do check the description before ordering as different sellers call different sizes large.

This seller would be worth a look. I haven't bought from them but they do larger sizes.

Thanks, h & m and that Amazon link looks promising, I think I want a pretty straw hat shirt of thing for holidays, although a more practical one might be a good idea as well
