Is this dress nice?

I bought this dress to go to a formal occasion. I was happy to get something I felt relatively good in but my daughter (16) thinks it's horrible so now I have second thoughts. I usually trust her judgement. What do you think? I am in my 40s, size 12, pear shape.

I know polyester is not ideal but the phase eight dress does not feel like cheap polyester if you know what I mean so it doesn't bother me with this dress.
I quote like the jolie moi dresses but I have tried this brand in the past and did feel like cheaper polyester to me.
Polyester does not irritate my skin or make me feel hot but the environmental impact does bother me.

Edited

Completely agree OP. There are different grades of polyester and the Phase eight looks a lot better than the Jolie moi which looks like cheap polyester.

The cut of the Jolie Moi dress across the top and the sleeves also looks cheap to me. Your dress is a bit more classy. I’d stick with that.

I don't like it at all

itsmylife2025 · 01/05/2025 13:19

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle the provinces ? 😂😂😂

The second Outnet dress is also 100% polyester. It looks very polyestery in the close up picture of the fabric too.

I’d personally avoid the Outnet, it’s mostly all overpriced shite that they can’t sell.

The outnet is hit and miss. For sure some of it hangs around for a while, but for a specific item at a reasonable price point with reliable delivery and easy returns it can be great. That second dress (the Vince one) - I have a shirt from the same collection, same fabric, new (not from the outnet) probably about 3 years ago, and it's actually really lovely. Very well made and finished and hangs with a lovely drape. It doesn't look or feel cheap at all. But I haven't seen the dress irl.

OP, city law firms, in London at least, aren't particularly staid these days.

I love this site.. LBD Occasion Prom Wedding Guest Bridesmaid Party Black & Red Dresses I always find exactly what I want on here.

These wouldn't be appropriate. You would very definitely stand out.

nojudge · 01/05/2025 13:24

@CluelessStyle the dress you posted today (the blue one in size 10) would definitely be very appropriate.

Those are completely wrong. Any of the other dresses, whether you [general you] love them or hate them are fine.

Don't blame me. I didn't start talking about "the provinces".

ginasevern · 01/05/2025 13:32

Personally I love the OP's original dress choice and might just go to Phase Eight to check it out for myself.

80smonster · 01/05/2025 13:36

Not keen.

the title is misleading, if you actually look on the site there are plenty of lovely floral dresses the same style as the OP's first suggestion and all different types, not just as the title suggests.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/05/2025 15:31

I don't love it. Even on the model it's not really eye catching or massively flattering. It's not dreadful but for the price I think maybe try something else.

itsmylife2025 · 01/05/2025 15:36

I do sincerely apologise @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle. This was for @Fleetheart!

I clicked on the link. The dresses which come up on the first page are way OTT for this.

don't worry - it's not my phrase, it is what my lawyer friends used to call the towns out of London! Maybe they still do :-)

It's a retirement dinner at a law firm in a fancy hotel.

I mean, it’s fine for a work event. But it’s very meh. I say that as a 39 year old. I wouldn’t be happy in something meh.

CluelessStyle · 01/05/2025 11:53

Have this one in my wardrobe, it's a 10 but with shapewear I think I can get away with it because it's stretchy

I really like this one OP. Don't like the original one you shared.

theDudesmummy · 01/05/2025 18:54

OP, sorry but that is a very dull dress. I am in my 60s and I would see it as too frumpy for me. My mother might possibly wear it.

theDudesmummy · 01/05/2025 18:54

I was referring to the first dress you posted.

theDudesmummy · 01/05/2025 18:56

I recently bought a floral dress from Hobbs for a wedding. They have some very nice ones.

MadKittenWoman · 01/05/2025 19:21

I’m 4’ 9”, 63 and wear bold Colours and prints. That is not a dress for a formal do.

Marmaladelade · 01/05/2025 19:22

It just about looks ok on her but I can see it looking frumpy on most others

HolyStyleFailBatman · 01/05/2025 19:36

I love the dress you chose OP-I think it's elegant and classy
