Hardshell vanity case - what is it for?

I am not going to take my toiletries on the plane in it because they would need to be in a plastic bag, so either in the main case or main carry on, as I am not going to carry main bag and the vanity case. But I can see them being handy for UK travel by car, as again you are not going to drag multiple cases on the train.

If you have one, how do you get the most use out of it?

I ended up on the same flight as someone I knew from school (we were coming back from the wedding of a mutual friend).

She had a LV vanity case in addition to her carry on bag and made her husband carry it. He had to put his book and passport in his pocket so that they only had two carry on items between them.
