Home Hair Dye

Has anyone had any success with home boxed hair dye? I had my long highlighted hair chopped off due to ends being really ratty and it's now between my jaw and shoulder. I've had a grey halo for about 20 years and despite getting the roots done the greys come back every four weeks. I just a) can't afford the constant hair dresser appointments anymore and b) would like to be a mid brown to keep it simple and leave the bleach alone and grow it again. I miss my long hair!
When I've used a box dye in the past it's always looked, well "box dyed!"
I have tried those spray root things and it's never looked right either! Any recommendations?

I find garnier to be the best for brown/red.

Oh I'm not ready for that just yet...if I thought it would remotely suit me I would but it's absolutely not for me. Some people look amazing but I need all the help I can get!

Root Touch Up. It’s absolutely brilliant.(not the spray paint / the actual box dye)

I've found L'Oreal Excellence Ash Dark Blonde works best for me... A lot of the brown dyes tend to have quite a red hue (especially after a few washes). The ashy tone helps to minimise that

Garnier nutrisse 6/6N will give you a rich mid mult tonal brown. That's the best I've used.

I agree with pp on Clairol's Root Touch Up.
