Are there any sandals you feel happy/safe to drive in?

I would rather not have to change my shoes in summer but maybe it's inevitable if I drive?

I don’t think I’ve ever changed my shoes to drive, or given what are on my feet a second thought before I started driving.

I would never drive in flip flops but I think a sandal with a proper back should be ok as they hold the foot in

I have some Birkenstock dupes that have two straps and am happy driving in those. But I am also happy driving in winter boots and high heels so maybe I'm just not very fussy!

I’m “funny” about this and almost only drive in trainers so following with interest.

Maybe I'm overthinking it!

I have feet size 4 1/2 to 5 and would be concerned the sole would bend under or the whole thing slide off or whatever. I've definitely had an issue in the past but I can't remember why or what happened as I've avoided it mostly since.

Perhaps I've been over cautious; a lot of it is probably about feeling in control.

Also I probably only wore my gazelles for most of last summer as the weather was shite!!

Did anyone see the Mike Leigh film Happy Go Lucky where Eddie Marsan was driving instructor to Sally Hawkins and it was a bone of contention between them because she kept wearing her high heeled boots? 👢

Hotter Tourist II
Regatta Santa Clara are my go-to for absolutely everything everyday during the summer. Secure, comfy, quick-drying, good for 15,000 steps and blimming cheap.

I wouldn't drive in backless sandals but I never wear them anyway so it wouldn't occur.

FoxRedPuppy · 19/04/2025 20:44

I drove in crocs all the time. In sport mode, obviously.

Gettingbysomehow · 19/04/2025 20:45

I spend all summer in toe post sandals but always make sure they have an elastic back strap so they don't slip off when walking or driving.

TeaIsNice · 19/04/2025 20:58

Some European countries you're not allowed to drive wearing sandals/flip flops. France being one of them

tobee · 19/04/2025 20:58

Good suggestions; thanks!

I have a pair of Gladiator sandals and a couple of toe post sandals with a secure strap around the heel/ankle that I can drive in but I'd never go anywhere further than the supermarket in them. I have a pair of deck shoes that I wear for driving in the summer, easy to slip off and change when I get to my destination or I wear trainers.

These are the ones I bought as recommended on another thread as comfortable for walking but stylish
