Wedding head gear dilemma

I’m going to a big traditional wedding in the summer. I haven’t been to one for a while. I’m step mother to the groom. I’m very happy with my dress and shoes but people keep asking if I’m wearing a hat or a fascinator. I really don’t want to. Will I look odd? I was pretty confident before but so many people have looked surprised I’m questioning myself. Wedding is in Ireland if that is relevant.

I don’t think you’ll look odd at all. It’s fine to not wear one if you don’t want to. I can’t imagine too many people giving it a second thought tbh.
I mean, if I knew you…

me ‘your outfit sounds lovely, will you be wearing a hat?’
you ‘no’
me ‘I’m sure you’re all looking forward to it, it will be a lovely day’ …moves on with life with no second thought about your hatless head.

Don’t overthink it. It will be fine.

Why not ask the bride and groom if they are expecting you to wear a hat? If not… go as you please.

Traditionally, mothers of the bride and groom wear hats or fascinators in Ireland. As you’re a stepmother I think that’s why people are a little surprised. But it doesn’t matter at all. Enjoy the day.

I didn't wear anything on my head and I was the mother of the groom. I also wore a wide-legged silk chiffon trouser suit, so fru-fru on my head would have been overkill imho.
Wear what you're comfy with and not feel you have to give in to others' fashion choices.

Thanks all. I’m not usually this unconfident about my outfit choices. Weddings do strange things to us. I agree that overall it’s best to wear what you feel comfortable in and a fascinator is definitely not that!
