Need an outfit for a special photo

My DC is having their photo taken for a special occasion on Thursday evening (think graduation type event) & we only found out last night. I’m expected to also be in the photo & I’ve absolutely nothing to wear. Please help!

I’m almost 50, 4 stone overweight (size 18-20), 5’4” & pear shaped (typical big backside and small boobs). Generally I wear skirts & tops and need tops of my arms covered! Does anyone have any ideas of something I can order that will arrive by then and look decent on me, especially given it’s the Easter Bank Holiday? Budget c. £150 Thanks in advance!

Is it a full length photo or will you be seated? Either way, I'd focus on a top with a neckline that flatters you i.e fits your shoulders exactly and not too tight or loose on the bust.

Also make sure the top half is in a colour that really lights up your face (mine would be navy so doesn't need to be bright necessarily). Some nice subtle jewellery that you love wearing.

If you get this right then you could wear e.g. navy or black skirt down the bottom with smart shoes. The attention should be on your lovely face and how proud you are of your DC!

Editted as noticed you prefer skirts!

Wrap around dresses are flattering. Phase 8 do quite a few different colours/fabrics in John Lewis.

Thanks both!

@Duckiesi’ll be standing slightly behind whilst my DC is seated and then all of us standing alongside each other so you will see the full length. Any thoughts on decent shops??

@Catsinaflatwraparound dresses don’t suit me at all as my boobs are too small, so they’re always quite ‘flappy’ across the chest unfortunately!

What colours do you like OP?

GhastlyGoodTaste · 19/04/2025 11:56

I feel for you, @MrsPeterHarris!

Presumably you’re not in London (where you might be able to arrange same day delivery next week)?

whats the vibe: is it occasion wear like (graduation seems to be now) or smart formal wear and do you have shoes?

if it’s smart formal I’d go for a plain or plain ish shirt dress with long sleeves- if between sizes size up and cinch in waist.

Do any of the department stores near you have a stylist.? Have you looked at Scarlett& Jo dresses. Also Roman dresses. Yours clothing have shops in many areas .M&S could be worth a look as well. I presume you are wanting something new rather than something you already have. All the best and I hope you enjoy the event.

Sorry Op, I re read your info and you have said you don't think you have anything suitable. Funnily enough I was wondering about clothes from supermarkets Tu at Sainsbury's, F&F at Tesco, or George at Asda. I was watching This Morning in the week and they featured a top and trousers that co-ordinated well.
