Makeup consultation - help!

I'm almost 40 and I still have no idea what I'm doing with makeup! I've got away with it for years but now I'm getting older I really do think I'd look better with 'proper' makeup. I'm honestly useless.

I'm willing to pay so thought I'd book a makeup consultation. I've booked one at Bobbi Brown next week but can't work out if the cost (£50) is redeemable against products - feels expensive if it isn't as I'm prepared to buy maybe a couple of hundred pounds worth of makeup if I like the consultation. So I'm having second thoughts.

I've heard Bobbi Brown is decent, but also Charlotte Tilbury and Nars? I want to avoid MAC as I've heard that's quite a bold look. I'm just after every-day makeup to wear to work etc. I don't wear much makeup at the moment so don't want anything too dramatic! My priority is getting a decent foundation, but I need help with everything really.

Any recommendations? I would prefer a more impartial consultation really where I could try a few different brands, like at John Lewis (but they only seem to do this at a small handful in the UK and I'm nowhere near any of them!). Anywhere else? I'd rather avoid a mobile MUA as last time I used a highly recomended local one for an event I looked like I had two balck eyes (plus I guess they'd be more limited for different products?).

Thank you!
