ChatGPT now has a feature where you can upload images and it can also generate images. Now, even if you would never in a million years upload a photo on mumsnet for a bunch of strangers to comment on, you can ask ChatGPT questions about your appearance instead.

I took a very average selfie with no makeup and no filters and with wrinkles clearly showing. I uploaded it to ChatGPT and asked it how old it honestly thought I looked. It said late 40s to early 50s. I'm early 50s so I'm happy with that.

I also asked it to give me a makeover. It put makeup on me, darkened and changed the style of my hair, neatened up my eyebrows and gave me a bit of lip filler. I'm now considering making these changes in real life! Here I am with my makeover.

This thread is so crazy, I was literally thinking this morning “I wonder if AI would be good at guessing someone’s age?”

But I can’t seem to access this feature?

Ever considered the impact of AI on the environment? Whilst you’re playing about with it, making funny memes etc, it’s consuming huge amounts of non renewable electricity and water to do it. Water, you say? Yep, water.
So, just as you stop and think, do I need this plastic, non recyclable thing… or use your reusable water bottle rather than buying bottled water… or turn all the lights off to save energy etc… use the same thought process as to whether your AI generated result is really something that you need to do.

Knowledge gives you choices, and choices give you control. 😊

DH was talking about this earlier - he was bemoaning those AI dolls that everyone is turning themselves into on social media.
I’m really curious about the environmental impact - does it use lots more energy than running standard internet servers etc then? Sorry if that’s a stupid question!

It got my age pretty accurate and my childs.

I don't really get the worry about uploading a photo because there are billions of photos of people that chatGPT had access to on the internet so what's one or two more? Photos of me are out there on facebook, linkedin, etc that it could use for example. If there are specific concerns about what it could do with our photos that I haven't thought of I'd be interested in hearing about them? I hadn't thought about the electricity and water issue though - that's a very good point.

Apparently I look like this - not at all - I wish I could have hair like this but mine is poker straight and won’t hold a curl at all. Inspired by this thread I asked it to assess my kibbe style type - it has me as a soft natural

The issue being they know who you are now and will link it to everything you do in chat gbt and beyond. And given the world who knows that they will do. They definitely can link it to your Mumsnet account and your email so everything you say on here can be linked to your image. Big brother is here.
My dad grew up in a communist country and reminds us that his uncles were murdered for attending an anti-communist meeting. It may seem a lifetime away but you never know.

I don't know...I mean, first of all they knew who I was anyway and them now having a couple of additional photos of me doesn't really change that. Secondly, I don't think I'm at all important enough for chatGPT to care about me. I'm not a threat to anyone and am not particularly interesting in any way. If I were younger or more politically active I would probably think differently, though.

Depends which pic you use. I’m 44 and uploaded a good pic of me with make up and it said late 20s to early 30s. Uploaded a close up selfie not smiling with no make up on and said mid to late 30s.

It seems to give everyone identical eyebrows in the glow-up versions.

I tried howolddoyoulook.com as suggested by a PP. Took a quick snap of my unmade-up face and it guessed 5 years older 😱
Sat up straight, smiled and took another snap and it guessed 6 years younger.
So a change of posture and expression took 11 years off me, apparently.
Then tried a photo taken just before going out, so makeup and hair done and smiling, and it guessed 15 years younger.
Wish I could trust it but not sure I do.

I think you might all be forgetting the ‘intelligence’ bit of ‘AI’. It will have emotional intelligence too, and know to say a younger age than it really thinks, just like you would. If you’re logged in, it knows how old you are. If you’re not, it can link to other photos of you, your LinkedIn, social media, etc and work out how old you are, not based on the photo, but based on the data held in its LLM.

Using it for a glow up, or ‘would this haircut suit me?’ might be valuable, but asking it to ‘guess’ your age is, um, naive (but maybe less brutal than asking MN!)

That would explain why these stupid AI dolls look flattering.

I put a nice picture from the weekend to n just for a laugh and it said early 30s which is nice as I’m stuck on Teams today and am sick of looking at my face. I don’t think it would say early 30s today 😂. I asked it to give me a glow up and this is what it came up with, which looks nothing like me except the hair 😂😂. At least it must think my hair is nice! I was dressed up for a line dancing party, I don’t usually dress as a cowboy!
