How many pairs of sunglasses do you own?

Last year I bought a fun, oversized green pair from Oliver Bonas. Then DH bought me some metal framed ones from Ray Ban. This year I’ve bought some purple/tortoiseshell ones from Vision Express & I’m getting another green pair from Oliver Bonas for my birthday.

Saw another pair I liked today & DH commented that I already had too many (he doesn’t even know about the birthday ones!). I want aaaallll the sunglasses. Different sizes, colours, shapes.

Tell me I’m not alone!

Same here.
Although mine are magnetic and attach to my varifocal glasses. They are a game changer.

I do have a pair of old prescription sunglasses that I wear to swim in on holiday.

I can't afford to treat glasses as a fashion accessory as my lenses are over £300 alone, so I just have one pair.

And no, I'm not going to Asda to get cheap glasses because with my complex prescription it really makes a difference to get better quality lenses.

They sound worth looking into.

I agree about the complex prescription and an excellent optician. My lady at an independent retired last year, the indy having been bought out by a small chain with pushy, salesy staff. I tried my local Boots and they were excellent, and a bit cheaper if that word can ever be applied to -7.5 with age related long sight and astigmatism.

LongRangeDessertGroup · 12/04/2025 07:19

I need prescription lenses so I only have two pairs. One pair is the cheapest I could get and I just wear them for paddle boarding, the other pair is Rayban for normal use.

Summertimeblahness · 12/04/2025 07:25

One prescription pair.

BritishFoodFan · 12/04/2025 07:27

Ohh, I love sunglasses, wear all year round, and rather like shoes they can really finish an outfit.

So I have a rather excessive 40ish, all designer or vintage. I never lose them either!

I do wear them all.

TennesseeStella · 12/04/2025 00:53

Um, one. You know, to wear on my one pair of eyes!

Do you also only have one pair of gloves?! And one pair of shoes? I do get your logic but personally like to have a choice between a couple of pairs. Plus one pair that live in the car because I frequently forget to take any.

RampantIvy · 12/04/2025 07:30

Sunglasses aren't a fashion accessory to me. They are a necessity.

Where do people keep 40+ pairs of sunglasses?

@myfavouritemutant I only have one pair of gloves, and one type of each shoe style. I tend to buy things like trainers in a colour that goes with everything I wear rather than several colours. I don't have room to have say 10 pairs of trainers plus other footwear.

Didntask · 12/04/2025 07:34

1 pair. About £6 from Peacocks a couple of years ago. It's hard to find glasses that look nice on me (high cheekbones and a high nose bridge does me no favours in the sunglasses dept) so I just wear a cheap pair to death/until I lose/break them and then spend ages trying to find another pair that dont look horrific on me.

Trumpsgoneloco · 12/04/2025 07:35

I don't have that many but plenty of people have lots of shoes, hats, bags or necklaces etc. It can't be that hard to see why some people like choices?

alcoholfreelife · 12/04/2025 07:36

I have three pairs, one in my car, one in my husband’s car and a pair in the house. I really do need to get a prescription pair though for when I’m not using my contacts but haven’t got around to it yet

evilharpy · 12/04/2025 07:40

Totting these up in my head... I have about 8 or 10 pairs of Ray Bans, one pair of Gucci, one pair of Tonmy Hilfiger, one pair of Mark Jacobs, one pair of Calvin Kleins that were £1 in a charity shop and I've worn to death. Plus one pair of prescription Mark Jacobs for the odd day when I can't be bothered with contacts.

Also a cheap pair of sports ones from amazon for running.

I wear sunglasses 12 months of the year, I can't function without them because my dodgy eyes can't see well in bright light. So I like a variety to go with different moods and outfits. I wear and love them all.

mainecooncatonahottinroof · 12/04/2025 00:47

Same! They are Dior though 😎

Me too!!! One pair of Raybans. The lenses cost a fortune and thankfully I chose well as happy wearing them a lot!

RampantIvy · 12/04/2025 07:46

I have just remembered that I bought a spare magnetic clip on to keep in the car, so one pair of prescription glasses plus 2 magnetic clip on sunglasses.

You have not made a fair comparison. I have a moderate amount of shoes, probably 15 pairs including sandals and boots, and half a dozen good handbags.

My shoes generally cost between £90 and £150 and last for several seasons. My glasses with a complex prescription cost about £700 and generally need replacing at least every three years.

I agree, that on the Continent glasses, not just sunglasses, are used more as a fashion accessory than here in the UK and it is common to have several pairs there. TBF DD has three or four pairs and wears them according to mood and so does DH but that's because he forgets/loses them and tends to keep a pair in the car, his study, his office, the bedroom. Neither wear their specs all the time and neither has a complex prescription - both can get what they need in Specsavers and buy one get one free.

crossstitchingnana · 12/04/2025 07:58

One

Purplecatshopaholic · 12/04/2025 08:10

I love sunglasses. Different shapes, different lens colours, etc. Think I have about 12 pairs, but I need moooooore, lol. Fave ones just now are Vivienne Westwood.

But not everybody needs prescription sunglasses? I suppose because there is such a wide variety of ages here you get different responses depending what age you are.

I'm not sure what age has to do with it, my son is 18 and needs bloody expensive prescription sunglasses.

He actually has two pairs as he sails so needs a pair for that and then a pair for regular use.

HelloNeighbour2021 · 12/04/2025 08:19

I've got x4 Ted Baker and x 2 Karen Millen, bought them from boots when they have sunglasses on clearance. I paid around £5 each. I got my partner a pair of barbour ones too.

Love a bargain!!

Myblueclematis · 12/04/2025 08:23

Three currently. One pair from M&S that I keep in the car, two that I bought online, I googled the highest protection to go for and bought two nice pairs, one in whatever bag I use and the other at home. I might treat myself to another pair this year, not sure type of frame or brand to go for though.

I used to have a pair of RayBans back in the 80s, very expensive at the time, they were a bit heavy for me so I gave them to my brother who promptly left them in a cafe the first time he went out wearing them. Idiot!

TheChosenTwo · 12/04/2025 08:23

2 - both raybans and both identical 😂 I have one pair that live in the car and one that live practically on my face at all times.
I’ve been spying up a pair though that I’m going to get in a couple of weeks at the airport, saw them last time I was there and dithered, annoyingly dh was offering to buy them for me but I wasn’t 100% sure and spent every day since being cross with my unusual indecision.

henlake7 · 12/04/2025 08:27

zero.
Im also one of those with a prescription that costs an insane amount and last time I asked my optician said they couldnt do a decent pair for my wonky eyes.

TBH I have worn them so infrequently I just dont like the look (I mean what I see rather then how they appear!).

11Turtle · 12/04/2025 08:30

I have about 6-8 pair. My fave ones are bent, anyone know how that can be fixed?

Trumpsgoneloco · 12/04/2025 08:30

@BritishFoodFan you don't think you are more likely to need prescription sunglasses as you age? Do you think your 18 yr old son is representative of all 18 yr olds?

Cookielover64 · 12/04/2025 08:31

5 pairs. I used to buy cheap and they would slide off my face when I looked down, then I bought a pair of Raybans and have slowly replaced all my sunglasses with prescription Raybans. My latest ones are transition lenses which live in my car for driving in and are amazing. I can't believe I spent so many years without prescription ones!

Age related degeneration is usually just long-sightedness, most older people I know just have a few pairs of 'readers' amd not complex prescriptions. Everyone I know with more complex prescriptions has been a life-long glasses wearer.

So in answer to your question, no!
