Formal coat for a wedding.

I’m attending a wedding in a non church type venue. It’s a formal non religious setting and weather demanding in may be outdoors. My question is could I wear a cream coloured formal coat over my colourful midi dress in the event of the weather being cool. I know that a cream or white dress would be a no no, but wondered if a formal light coloured coat would be acceptable or a faux pas?

I’m slightly ashamed to say that long before Mumsnet existed I owned a beautiful cream tweed jacket, which I wore to at least two weddings with a red skirt. No one side-eyed me and I received a gratifying number of compliments on my outfit (including from the brides). Now - after maybe a decade and a half on this august forum - I definitely would not reach for anything similar to wear to a wedding. I’d choose one of the fifteen trillion other colour options available to me.
