AIBU to carry on wearing brogues instead of trainers all through summer

I’m always on those threads asking for alternatives to trainers in the summer. Trainers are okay and I do have some nice converse etc but I just never feel quite right in them and they don’t look very good on me imho. All winter, I wear some nice black DM brogues, with jeans etc, so comfy and I can walk for miles in them. And I keep thinking why can’t I just carry on wearing them even in summer. But a little voice keeps saying I shouldn’t be doing that.

i know lots will come on here with the old “wear what you like” thing and I will and I do. I’m just curious to see if others think it’s a big no no.

i should add that if it’s really, really hot I’ve got some Birkies and sandals and I wear skirts and dresses etc. but Birkies aren’t nearly as comfortable as my beloved brogues.

It's fine. I never wear proper "summer' shoes because my feet are weird and finding comfy sandals, for example, is impossible. I don't think anyone really notices.

I think black brogues can look a bit heavy in the summer but I am now at the age where comfort outweighs everything in footwear. I've got some DM sandals which are really comfortable.

Happyinarcon · 09/04/2025 08:32

I tend to wear mules so I can slip them off for a bit if I stop for a coffee somewhere outside

PuppyMonkey · 09/04/2025 08:33

Forgot to say I also have some brown brogues, haven’t worn them yet but wondering if they would be a bit less heavy looking?

I just wear particular shoes until it's too hot/cold to keep wearing them.

Visually black heavy shoes might look out of place during a heatwave, but the only reason not to wear them is if your feet are too hot.

Radra · 09/04/2025 08:39

I only wear brogues or sandals in the spring/summer. Boots in the winter.

I hate trainers!

PuppyMonkey · 09/04/2025 08:40

Yes, I wouldn’t wear them during a really hot spell, I’ve got sandals and dresses I’d wear in a heatwave. But let’s be honest, it’s often not a heatwave in summer in UK, it’s showery and dull. And I suppose they’re the days I’m talking about tbh.

Black would look odd with very summery clothes imo but tan would be great.

Coali · 09/04/2025 08:43

What are you wearing them with? I think tan brogues look summery with cropped trousers. Not so much with dresses. Possibly ok with a mini-skirt and no tights.

PuppyMonkey · 09/04/2025 08:45

I’d wear with jeans basically, same as I would trainers. Not with skirts. I’ve got sandals for skirts.

After your OP I was going to ask why you thought they wouldn't look right, but then saw your next post. You think they'll look too heavy? I don't think so, personally, but I'm also a person who wears dm shoes where most folks would wear trainers. I only have two pairs a black and a brown. I do have a pair of white trainers, but they never get worn as an intentional part of an outfit, they're just by the front door to thrown on if I need to pop out.

DinoLil · 09/04/2025 08:53

I'm a bit odd and can't stand my feet being 'trapped' in shoes when it's warm. It's a weird, sensory thing.

I wore my new pair of Fitflops on a dog walk on Sunday. My last pair broke. Love them, worn this brand for years. Well, I came hobbling back, big and second toes rubbed raw from the toe post, blood all over new shoes.

So, I'm back in socks and boots and I'm also wondering if I can pull this off over the summer. I see people wearing DMs with dresses and it looks great. Trainers are a good idea, but they are very expensive for decent ones that aren't sweaty plastic. But can I cope with the foot claustrophobia?

OP, I shall be following with interest!

Floisme · 09/04/2025 09:56

In the summer I switch mainly between tan brogues and, if it's dry, plimsols. Occasionally sandals but I'm not a big fan because my feet burn. I mostly wear them with trousers / jeans but I'd wear them with a dress or skirt and not think anything of it. I never wear trainers - I don't like them.

Ineffable23 · 09/04/2025 10:12

I prefer brown to black for the summer but for with jeans, absolutely. No need to change shoes for the summer unless your feet are too hot!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 09/04/2025 10:23

Trainers give me awful athletes foot. And the. I can’t get rid of it. I tried for a couple of years.

So I’m back to loafers ns brogues. And Converse. It’s the padding in the trainers that causes the problems.

PuppyMonkey · 09/04/2025 12:09

This is all quite reassuring, thanks all.
