Please help me style this for the races

Off to Newmarket Racecourse next week. They have a dress to feel your best policy. I've never been to the races, so I'm intrigued how this plays out in real life.

I love this dress and thinking of wearing it. I'm thinking strappy heels (maybe kitten)? What jacket/cardigan would you wear? And hairpiece needed?

I'm on a New Look price budget. I'm leaving home on Sunday. So online purchases will need to arrive quickly.

Thanks

Love the dress. I've been to the races twice , both work events. I wouldn't wear kitten heels as there's a lot of grass areas and those who wore pointy heels ended up carrying them.

Definitely need a substantial cardi or a wrap. Racecourses are always windy (they have to be very open,,or you wouldn’t be able to see). PP is right about the shoes, and I wouldn’t bother with any sort of hat/ headpiece , they are only really much in evidence at Ascot or Ladies Day at Aintree.

Also, make sure you have a bag with a good closure, because unfortunately there are quite a few thieves about these days. Have a good time!

Race courses are funny places. Agree on something warm, particularly as the weather next week looks mixed.

Also, and conversely, if it’s sunny you will get sunburnt if it’s sunny. There is minimal shade. So consider some suncream.

Your feet will hurt whatever footwear you go for. There is always guaranteed to be more standing and walking than you expect. The ground should be dry and not too sinky but do watch for stilettos or kitten heals. Wedges always a popular race going choice.

Hats are optional, so entirely up to you. If you do wear one make sure it’s comfy and doesn’t slip off every time you move.

Also agreed on the properly closed bag/purse and ideally not a clutch as it’s a pain to carry around all day, and you wouldn’t want to put it down even if you can find somewhere to put it (back to my standing around point)

Take plasters and some safety pins in your bag, you never know.

Hope you have a great time.

Newmarket is a fairly relaxed racecourse, your tea style dress will be perfect.
I think you’ll be better in a block heel, rather than a kitten heel.
A red cropped tailored style jacket would look good with that dress.
Both of these are from New Look…

You don’t need a hat. No to kitten or any form of heel unless it’s a block heel or a wedge. You’ll just sink into the grass. Likely you’ll need a jacket as a PP said, it can be windy as it’s so open. Sun cream, sun glasses too unless it’s raining then you’ll need a brolly and a coat and boots.

Really helpful.

And I hadn't even thought about the heels sinking into the grass and the open nature of a racecourse.

Secure bag chosen 😁

Thanks all

Some block heels or wedges
Maybe a red bag for a pop of colour
I'd wear a leather jacket on this occasion and where you're going but not for any other races.
I'm late 30s and would wear my hair down with a nice chunky hair band but if I was 40+ I wouldn't.
Dress is lovely, enjoy your day.

The chanel type jacket and black patent low wedges would really dress it up...live your dress BTW 👗 😍 so wouldn't really need anything on your head but if you still wanted to...something like this is pretty jazzy and the black pearls would fit withe canel theme!!https://www.amazon.co.uk/TRIXES-Black-Beaded-Headband-Accessory/dp/B0D7C9N7FX/ref=asc_df_B0D7C9N7FX?mcid=ab23d12f347533f6b37c2a41c68b683d&tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=710820487428&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8239620370655864576&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9046603&hvtargid=pla-2356741116203&psc=1&gad_source=1

Punsandroses · 09/04/2025 16:29

Chanel theme...that should have said!!

BeakyFlinders · 09/04/2025 18:03

Definitely shoes that won’t sink in the grass. Also shows you can walk comfortably in.

waltzingparrot · 09/04/2025 18:11

I'd pop round your local charity shops and see what red hats they have available.

LlynTegid · 09/04/2025 18:12

Have a lovely time. I am confident you will not be like the sight for sore eyes I witnessed when on a train going to Chester on race day.

Globules · 17/04/2025 15:11

Thank you again for all your suggestions.

We went yesterday. I had an absolute ball.

I wore wedges, but there was no need. I didn't walk on any grass at all. Everywhere we went outside was tarmacked.

Very blowy on the open course, so the warm jacket came in use.

I saw all sorts of attire there. I felt very dressed down compared to some, and very dressed up next to others. Ripped jeans, scruffy trainers, band t shirts were not an uncommon sight on both men and women.

We're planning our next visit in the summer.
