Any ring experts around? What carat could this be?

I have inherited a ring. It is a diamond but I don’t know what carat it could be, maybe 0.5? I just wondered if anyone could help me identify what it might be. No real reason, just curious. I have no intention of selling it, but it doesn’t have any particular sentimental value either. Original owner never wore it. I will wear it because I like it. Just wondering what it is.

I’d say from a .3 to a .5 - difficult to tell from a pic. There are lots of other factors to take into account with diamonds though, like clarity, colour and cut, all of which can have an impact on the value. Have a little Google and you’ll go down a rabbit hole!

WorriedRelative · 04/04/2025 12:50

I would say probably less than half a carat, more than 0.25 though. Somewhere around a third.

However that is just based on rings I own and you can't tell from a photo. It is the weight that is key and depending upon the cut the diamond could look a bit bigger or smaller.

I’ve worked in the industry a bit and as a pp said there’s more to take into account such as clarity but assuming it’s not completely flawless and you haven’t got giant hands it looks like a .3. It’s got 8 claws which is sometimes used to make small diamonds appear larger than they are, which could lead me to think it may not be a particularly expensive diamond to start with. Have you had it cleaned? A good ultrasonic cleaning should have it flashing again.

I’d say 0.25 at a guess, it looks smaller than 0.5.

Have a little look at the hall marks inside the band. Many diamond rings will have DIA stamped, and/or the carat (eg. 0.3)

Thanks so much everyone!

Mine is .25 and this looks slightly bigger than mine so maybe it’s in between.

What size is your finger?

User19876536484 · 04/04/2025 18:20

It looks the same as mine. So, probably a third.

Mine is 0.25 and I think it looks bigger than mine

Tourmalines · 04/04/2025 22:28

Measure the diameter of the diamond in millimeters, then google the size . But that’s only an approximate because it depends on thickness of the girdle and depth of the pavilion and crown height but that will give you a roundabout ballpark.

glitterturd · 04/04/2025 22:55

I would say it's a 0.3 - 0.4.
