How should I wear tights?

After 55 years of wearing trousers I’ve started wearing pretty skirts and dresses and I love it! But I struggle to know the ‘rules’ of fashion (I have ASD). I wear 10 deniers black tights with everything but is that wrong?

I have black shoes but also blue, burgundy and brown. I was always told ‘black goes with everything’ but is this wrong when it comes to tights?

I know there are tan coloured tights but I (probably mistakenly) thought they were old fashioned because my mum and grandmother used to wear them. Also, wouldn’t it look odd with my leg colour slightly darker than my arms?

Please help me!

Based on your thread title I was going to post, "on your legs unless you're a bank robber". Honestly, anything goes although my preference is for opaque tights if wearing black or navy. Flesh coloured tights mean your legs look an even colour and your footwear more comfortable. You don't have to wear tan tights.

I don't wear them and I wear skirts why do you feel you have too?

Mum2jenny · 02/04/2025 20:51

Why do you feel you need to wear tights with skirts? It is optional

RampantIvy · 02/04/2025 20:56

@BlondiePortz and @Mum2jenny I can't anser for the OP, but I wear tights with skirts and dresses unless the weather is hot because my feet get cold.

We don't get a lot of barefoot hot weather where I live unless we have an exceptional summer.

Sweaty feet mostly! But also it’s still a bit too cold for bare legs. My skirts are also very smart (for the office)so tights feel appropriate. Although maybe I’ve got this wrong too! Oh why didn’t everyone get a book on “how to dress” when we turned 16!

I only wear flesh colour tights unless I’m wearing a black dress or skirt or going to a funeral.

Try them. If you dont like the look, go back to black. Nothing ventured Notting gained.

Black tights are so heavy looking with light coloured dresses of skirts. Never wear black tights with white shoes or sandals. Just don’t!

I wear tights that match my skin tone unless black ones go with my outfit. I don't wear them if wearing sandals or trainers with dress or skirt

I just wear the things that go on my feet only

WildestDreamer · 02/04/2025 20:59

I like a nice coloured pair of tights which match part of my outfit.

mdinbc · 02/04/2025 23:14

I'm not a fan of tan tights, to me they are old-fashioned looking. I do like a sheer black or grey tight with just about anything for the office, but if you are wearing summery dresses and colours, then you could go bare-legged.

I think those american tan tights are really the only ones that really look naff at the moment....anything else goes!
I wear opaque tights, mostly black for alot of the year. Sometimes coloured to match outfits. I will also wear scrunchy socks as well if my feet are cold, either with boots, baseball boots or brogues.

If you have nice legs/confidence you can just go bare legs with or without socks as an option too.
