Is it all really crap material / quality?

Nope, a lot of it is actually decent. I have loads from there. But you'll now get a pile on of people moaning about their ethics etc.

Unfortunately not all of us have the budget for fancy top quality ethical stuff

EveryDayisFriday · 31/03/2025 19:50

I think it's ok. I'm losing weight and needed some cheap bits to get me through until I reach my target weight and will then get some decent quality. I've been pleased with everything I've bought so far.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 31/03/2025 20:54

It’s not the only bad fast fashion retailer out there. But it’s absolutely scraping the barrel in all things ethical. Horrendous not just in terms of worker conditions but also environmental impact, stealing small makers designs, inferior safety protections and actively and deliberately creating algorithms on its app to encourage over consumption.

grumpypedestrian · 31/03/2025 21:09

Being cheap is no excuse, Vinted is cheap too if that’s really your reason for buying Shein.

BashfulClam · 31/03/2025 21:13

Always check the reviews. I have only ever returned one item that was total garbage.

Badgerstmary · 31/03/2025 21:49

My sister bought some jumpers from there. They looked lovely but after 2 washes they had gone completely bobbly & looked absolutely awful.

Marianwallace · 31/03/2025 21:53

My daughter bought bridal shoes from there. They were stunning, and guests couldn't believe they were Shein and cost £17.

CharlotteCChapel · 31/03/2025 22:00

Much like Temu Shein does not have its own factories. Some factories are better than others, ditto the quality.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 31/03/2025 22:11

I've had mostly really good stuff from there.

BirraMoretti · 31/03/2025 22:22

I agree their ethics are awful but you can’t compare with Vinted - on there you take a chance on the seller (I’ve had some dodgy ones) and can only choose from what’s available (often years old complete with rubbish photos) and sometimes it’s in fairly poor condition.

Clearly Shein aren’t great as a business (although I suspect many other stores use the same suppliers) but Vinted is not the amazing alternative people make out.

Windy1234 · 31/03/2025 22:48

Vinted is also not that cheap when you take into account the fees and shipping

Tbrh · 31/03/2025 23:26

Hideously crappy

i am on a tight budget but would never buy from shine. I just prefer a few quality pieces from natural fabrics to “loads” of absolute rubbish.

PinkD87 · 01/04/2025 00:57

I love shein for its prices, I’ve had a lot of lovely worn dresses from there. The only issue I’ve had is some of the dresses are REALLY short, so have to be worn as tops. The quality is fine to me. I’ve only really had dresses from there and maybe one pair of leggings, but I can’t complain.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 01/04/2025 02:01

If you’re on a tight budget then stop buying clothes for a while!

shopping at these places is awful. Environmentally and ethically

This is what I’m imagining. A bit like Roman?

This. They are absolutely awful, with concerns around forced labour and child labour. Do you really want to buy from a company like this?

No, much worse.

it's shit made of polyester under terrible working conditions. Why would you even consider buying from there regardless of quality????

grumpypedestrian · 01/04/2025 20:04

Sadly people don’t care about working conditions when they can buy cheap rubbish that most likely ends up in landfill.

People need to question how much they spend on these sites before saying it’s simply down to cost. You don’t need to buy whole wardrobes of clothes when you can just buy 1-2 items for the same price instead.

So you’re on a budget, but buy “loads” from Shein? Help me understand!

You need to be careful about what you buy. Some things I've had for years and others not so great.
Their motf range is more expensive and nice quality
They make excellent clothes for petite women ( I'm only five feet tall) which is why I use them.
I've had much worse clothes from cider who are similar but a bit more expensive.
My recent M ans S purchases have been awful quality. Thin material, holes after one wear, it's depressing

Screamingabdabz · 01/04/2025 20:32

it is inexcusable to buy from either of the mentioned websites if you have any conscience about human rights whatsoever.

BeretRaspberry · 01/04/2025 21:07

My SIL gets a lot from there and has had some lovely things. My daughter has had some things as well but with hers it’s been hit and miss quality wise. Returns are really easy though.
