How much do you pay for clothes alterations?

I'm going to contact a local dressmaker to enquire about shortening a dress. (I'm quite good at dressmaking but don't have a machine that does invisible hemming on a silky style fabric.)

It's a higher end brand and I paid around £150 for it.

I've no idea what to expect.
£15? £20?

Double that!

I meant to say also depends on work involved, straight, flared, fancy border or not etc. I imagine it’s lined, so two lots to shorten. My friend also paid £150 for her dress to be shortened. It cost £50.

Oh dear. More than I thought. That sounds crazy.

A local dry cleaners has someone doing it and they charge around £15 but the shop looks a bit grubby and I don't want to risk it.

Yes it's lined which is one reason I don't want to tackle it as I'd have to unpick the seam. It's A line so not especially flouncy and viscose but it will need a few inches cutting off. (It's a Whistles dress.)

If you want it done well, you’ll have to pay up! A botched job will be terrible, and you’ll have to find someone else to do it. It’s worth it .

I’d agree about £50 ish

I paid £15 for a new zip on a jumpsuit, and £20 for a denim skirt to be taken in and up recently.

I’ve just paid 45 to get the sleeves on my daughters blazer taken up

I paid £15 7 years ago to shorten a pleated skirt if that helps

DD has sewing machine so is constantly altering clothes on that

Thanks all. I'll get some quotes.
