I'm a size 14 and all my trousers are a 14.
Wtf. This is the size guide for Levi's jeans and honestly I'm in shock. I am absolutely not a 16 let a lone a 20!
My husband then went into fact checking mode and also measured me and couldn't believe it.
No wonder I bought a size 14 river island jeans and they didn't fit!

That chart sums up exactly how difficult I find it getting clothes that fit me. I have never had a large protruding tummy and am mostly flat at the front (although carrying a small post-baby paunch right now) but I am tall and literally big boned with no curves. According to this chart I’d need a size 20 for my waist (35”) and a size 10 for my hips (38”). I usually wear a 12/14 but they all seem to be simultaneously too tight and too baggy. When you factor in a longer than average torso (which clothes designers never seem to consider when lengthening the leg), it’s a wonder I ever manage to get dressed.

You are an apple shape so Levis wont suit you. Have you tried Next? They cut specifically for smaller legs/bottoms and larger waists.

Looks ok to me. I'm a 27 jeans... and according to your chart, I'm a 27 jeans.

expat321 · 31/03/2025 11:35

Although I'm a 26.7in waist so according to that I'm a size 4 which I'm definitely not. I'm an 8.

Jeans need to sit at the hips anyway, no point going for waist size if they don't fit over your bum.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 31/03/2025 11:59

One thing about Levi's shops I've found was that the assistants were very good at finding me the right size, a few years back anyway. In the UK at a size 14/16 and 5'7", the assistant handed me a pair of 31/31 and they were perfect. I had been picking up 34s and though I'd need much bigger but she was spot on.

The weird thing is though I remembered doing the same thing in New York 25 years ago (hence why I went for the larger sizes) and size 31/31 jeans fitting then when I was a size 8/10 uk, 26" waist and several stone lighter! So the sizing has definitely changed.

I remember not being able to get a single pair of 501s to fit at all when I was a size 12/14 as a teenager in the late 1980s. I couldn't get my legs in them, or if I did they were then massive on the waist.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 31/03/2025 12:08

According to that chart now I'd be a size 10 hips and a size 16 waist.

Fortunately Sainsbury's and Next size 12L fit perfectly and are much cheaper. Though they also say size 12 is 29" waist - mine is 32.5" when I last measured (the other day as I'm trying to lose weight) but the jeans fit fine on the waist. Which is great as a few weeks ago they were tight before I lost ten pounds and I resolved to slim into them!

Interesting, I thought I was essentially a rectangle. I’m fairly flat chested as well, and my waist isn’t bigger than my hips. I will have a look at Next though, it’s impossible to know where to start because no brands really advertise the shape they are designed for as they want to appeal to everyone. And I don’t have the time to shop around and try loads of things on, plus physical shops never have the leg length in stock! 😩

Deathraystare · 31/03/2025 14:50

All I know is I am a size 20. I don't have much of a waist and don't know the measurement (don't want to know either!) so only buy jeans by the dress size not the waist measurement. So Levis are out for me!

TheBackupPlan · 29/03/2025 16:53

Have you actually measured the waist on the river island jeans? If your waist measures 36 but the jeans measure 31.5, then you are squeezing into them. Maybe your waist measures smaller or maybe the jeans waist measures bigger?

This. The chart may say that a size 14 measures 31.5”, but that may not be accurate. If your waist measures 36”, the actual jeans either measure more than the chart says or they are very tight on you.

You say presumably but OP could easily be reading the chart incorrectly, she hasn’t confirmed

So she's measured herself at 36 inch waist and says she's a 20 by the chart but she hasn't yet confirmed she's reading the chart correctly?!

That's literally what the chart says Confused. I'm totally confused what people want OP to confirm regarding reading the chart.

It's more likely she's measured herself in the wrong place, not at her natural waist.

OP never said she had measured a 36 inch waist was the point, but that comment was 2 days ago now so largely irrelevant.

She said she measured herself and looking at the Levi’s chart, those measurements would make her a size 20. So presumably that meant her waist was around 36”.

Interesting, that might be why Next jeans have never fit me (a pear shape at every weight I have ever been).

Mind you Levis never used to fit me either, I was desperate for 501s when I was in my teemns but they were too tight in the thigh. I should try the modern ones really.

Right, or she could have read it incorrectly. It’s not an absolutely out there question, why are you bothered though? I only asked, I wasn’t saying anything bad to OP.

CharlotteCChapel · 31/03/2025 21:56

I'm off the chart ATM but I'm currently very bloated. I don't wear anything that doesn't have an elasticated waist for the above-mentioned bloat.

Even if I didn't bloat I never could get a pair of jeans to fit de to hourglass figure. I could literally put a tennis ball down the back.

i hear you on the gape at the back of jeans issue!! Much less when there is a little added Lycra through

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 31/03/2025 22:14

If my jeans are falling down what is the issue?

I’m not bothered. OP asked and I commented on the thread and answered another poster, that’s how forums work. 😉

You were bothered enough to raise with me twice something I asked, perfectly reasonably, 2 days ago.

no; I’m not confused. I made the comment 2 days ago. You commented twice, today.

I’d be a size 8 by waist measurement and a 20 by hips. Size charts are pretty useless imo.

I think the sizing is correct. I'm a 12 and wear a 29 inch.
