I'm a size 14 and all my trousers are a 14.
Wtf. This is the size guide for Levi's jeans and honestly I'm in shock. I am absolutely not a 16 let a lone a 20!
My husband then went into fact checking mode and also measured me and couldn't believe it.
No wonder I bought a size 14 river island jeans and they didn't fit!

Have you actually measured the waist on the river island jeans? If your waist measures 36 but the jeans measure 31.5, then you are squeezing into them. Maybe your waist measures smaller or maybe the jeans waist measures bigger?

No I haven't actually so I will do that

Wait, did you measure the belt with a rigid tape measure or are you going from the size of the belt?

Most people pull a fabric tape measure pretty tightly, despite what instructions say, so that could easily take 2 inches off your actual total.

Are you measuring your waist in the right place?

Google AI said to find the bottom of my ribcage, find the top of my hip bone and measure half way between the two? I think that did take it over my tummy 🤔

Just used a rigid tape measure and I didn't make the belt tight around me basically just placed on

I love Levis, most of mine are 28/29 waist, I'm a Suze 10-12 so that'd be accurate according to the chart. I'm still holding on to a pair of 26 in the hopes of getting back into them, I was a size 8 back then!

wearyourpinkglove · 29/03/2025 17:01

According to the ASOS size chartI'm a size 16 but actually when I wear their clothes I'm a size 8-12! So hard to know what to buy.

Because everything I wear is a 14 and fitsm all my work trousers and jeans. So to fit Levi's size 20 seems a bit of a jump.
For all those vanity sizing quotes I was born in '86 so I've only known the "new" sizes.

I am ahem quite a lot older than you, so I still think in 90s sizes! Back then it went:
24” waist - size 8
26” waist - size 10 etc
My mum still thinks in 70s sizes, so would consider a 24” waist a size 10 etc. Sizes change such that size 12 fits the ‘average’ woman apparently. We are all (well most, I’m a shorty) taller now, with broader bone frames, as we have enough to eat, so everyone is bigger in general.
Basically, it’s all made up and not to be worried about!

binkie163 · 29/03/2025 17:07

Levi's have remained 1970 sizes. 30" waist has always been size 12. I have Levi's over 30 years old still going strong. Go into a Levi shop and get measured and fitted for jeans they will last for years and get better with age. Some styles will be able to size down like the 569 wide leg relaxed fit.

TimeForABreak4 · 29/03/2025 17:14

Says I'm a size 4, I'm an 8 and absolutely wouldn't fit in to a size 4.

If you have a short torso your waist will be higher. I just measure where I go in, which is roughly the bottom of my ribcage.

I wish I could rely on measurements, but I have a thick waist (30 inches) and small hips (37 inches) so I never know what to go for. Currently a size 8-10 in most places, but even when I was my smallest (size 6) my waist was never less than 28 inches.

But the Levi size 14 is 31.25 inches and the other size chart you posted of size 14 is similar so why do you think you would be a 20?

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/03/2025 19:05

Based on my measurements I physically took which is why I think the chart is a load of nonsense. Clearly some people think the chart is correct and I clearly only think I'm a 14 when I'm definitely a 20. I might buy size 20 and post the results

DownWhichOfLate · 29/03/2025 19:17

But based on the River Island jeans photo, you would probably be more comfortable in a 16 or 18. Wear the size that fits, not the size you think you should be.

What was the measurement though

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/03/2025 19:32

I’m a UK 12 and get 29 in Levi’s. I always thought a 30 waist corresponded to 12 in women’s bottoms?

Presumably 35-36 inch waist?!

It does. A Levi size 29 is 30.25 waist.

You say presumably but OP could easily be reading the chart incorrectly, she hasn’t confirmed

Yeah that’s true

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/03/2025 19:47

bsaptimdaenr · 29/03/2025 19:37

It does. A Levi size 29 is 30.25 waist.

Sorry my post didn’t make sense, trying to do two things at once - I meant that I thought the size chart was right!

Game0fCrones · 29/03/2025 19:57

You see, this is why I buy Levis - because they're true to size - and they cut for hourglass figures (or people with a smaller waist). I usually wear an 8 or if i want a more relaxed fit, then a 10.

Surely you must have heard of vanity sizing in the high street?

ShockedandStunnedRepeatedly · 29/03/2025 20:09

But all that Levi’s are saying is, if you think you’re a 12 or a 14, buy XX size in Levi’s to fit you… so just buy the size you think you should need according to your dress size and let us know how it goes

Caspianberg · 29/03/2025 20:32

I love Levi jeans. They are the only ones that fit properly as the sizes don’t change every 5 mins.

Im a 6-8, and always buy the 720 high rises in a size 26 waist, 27 leg.

Geneticsbunny · 29/03/2025 21:58

@redshoesredlaces that makes more sense but why are the vintage ones measuring at 32 inches on their waistband?
Both are 501s but I guess the vintage could be fakes?

Geneticsbunny · 29/03/2025 22:03

@Hungrycaterpillarsmummy Google ai is wrong. Waist is always measured at your smallest point, but that might not be where the jeans waist is which may be partly where the issue lies.
