I'm a size 14 and all my trousers are a 14.
Wtf. This is the size guide for Levi's jeans and honestly I'm in shock. I am absolutely not a 16 let a lone a 20!
My husband then went into fact checking mode and also measured me and couldn't believe it.
No wonder I bought a size 14 river island jeans and they didn't fit!

These things are total nonsense imo!

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/03/2025 12:58

Clearly but it makes it tricky to buy correct size jeans. I looked into it because the river island ones doesn't fit

Looks fine to me. I'm a 12 and the size 12 is right for me 30 inch waist. I might need to size up as I'm pear shaped - i might need the 14 as i have wide hips.

If you have a nearly 36 inch waist you're not a 14. Vanity sizing has become a thing maybe levi don't do that.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/03/2025 13:01

@ThisUniqueDreamer I'm not a size 20 😂😂

@ThisUniqueDreamer I'm not a size 20 😂😂

So why did you ask then.

If you have a thirty six inch waist, then you won't be a standard size fourteen

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/03/2025 13:03

I'm not asking anything I'm creating a discussion that sizes are bullshit.

I’m a size 14 too and there is no way I would buy a pair of size 20 jeans even if they fit me like a glove. My waist is actually 34” but in jeans sizes usually 31-32 fit well

Doggymummar · 29/03/2025 13:09

It's getting over my thighs that's the problem. I'm wearing 12r from Abercrombie right now but have 10 in Shein, and upto 20 in other brands. Size is just a number it's fit that counts, and stretch

PsychoHotSauce · 29/03/2025 13:10

Well that chart is utter nonsense. According to Levi's I'm currently a UK size 4 (25in waist 35in hip). I don't own anything smaller than an 8, most of the time I'm a 10.

What's interesting is the way it skews the other way as you go up the chart. At my heaviest I had a 30in waist and a 42in hip. I (just) still fit in my size 12 jeans (normally from Next) but if I was buying new I'd have bought a 14 iyswim. According to the chart I'd be looking at getting a 16 and an 18 and having to try both.

I'm pretty average height and shape, so depending on my weight they've managed to both underestimate my 'uk size' and overestimate it too. what the actual fuck.

RoastdinnerSunday · 29/03/2025 13:13

According to that size chart, I am size 8 hip size and size 16 waist size. I am a size 12, sometimes 10. I am quite small with some fat round the waist and stomach. I think I am a fairly normal shape for a post menopausal woman but the size charts do not agree.

LifeBeginsToday · 29/03/2025 13:14

I'm a 16 and wear size 33 in Levis. But I must say, their sizing is terrible. I always order a 33, but somwtimes need to get them taken in, whereas other times they are a perfect fit.

MightAsWellBeGretel · 29/03/2025 13:15

The sizing looks big to me - I'm usually an 8 with 26 inch waist and 36 hips; this has me as a 6!

🙄🙄🙄

grow up

OwlBasket · 29/03/2025 13:17

Yeah. The sizing has just not been adjusted for vanity sizing, it’s the same as (not that old) vintage sizing, but obviously bigger than older vintage sizing. Sizing is arbitrary but yes, you’d have been a high street 20 in the 90s, no question. Now you usually buy high street 14.

size is not a measure of value

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/03/2025 13:20

Maybe I should buy the 20 and see if the size chart is correct!

@SpringIsSpringing25 you seem nice 👀

Geneticsbunny · 29/03/2025 13:20

What's interesting is that I recently discovered that Levi's also vanity size for mens jeans too. So their current "32 inch waist mens jeans are actually 36inches at the waist! That makes even less sense. Only found out as I bought my OH some vintage ones, which are true to size, and they didn't fit.

TorroFerney · 29/03/2025 13:23

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 29/03/2025 13:03

I'm not asking anything I'm creating a discussion that sizes are bullshit.

I am between a 6 and an 8 in most clothes now a 6 is bigger than it used to be and the measurements are right for me.

Goatinthegarden · 29/03/2025 13:26

What’s confusing me, is that I always assumed a 26 meant it was to fit a 26inch waist, but here, a 26 is for a waist of 27.25inches.

From a size 24-30, the waist size is 1.25 inches bigger, but then after a size 30, there are bigger jumps between size and measurement.

Why not just sell clothes by their actual measurements? Surely that would make everything more straightforward?

crackofdoom · 29/03/2025 13:30

Hmmm. Well, I'm sitting here in my Primark size 12s, reading that I should be wearing size 16 Levis. However, when I bought a vintage sewing pattern I was also a size 16 according to that, so make of that what you will...

Offtobuttonmoontovisitmrspoon · 29/03/2025 13:32

Go and try some on. I love the fit of Levi’s and go by measurements rather than size. I think mine are all 8’s but not 100% sure. They fit perfectly which is all that matters.

minnienono · 29/03/2025 13:39

Levi’s run smaller than some but that said, I have the 33 inch waist jeans and I’m a size 16, they are a little loose so need a belt

BigFatLiar · 29/03/2025 13:44

There's no standard size nn, each manufacturer/retailer has their own criteria. Size 14 from one shop does not necessarily match size 14 from another. All you can do really is check before you buy.

IME sizing isn’t even consistent within brands (at high street prices), and indeed certainly not between brands. But, the more expensive the brand, the more consistent, and smaller, the sizing.

Janedoe82 · 29/03/2025 13:50

Looks similar to hollister sizing- I buy a 27 or 28 waist and I am a 10/12.
