It's a casual barny wedding so want to be relaxed but have no suitable smart enough top and no suitable flatish shoes... help please.

NO Don’t wear trousers to a wedding if you must wear a suit like the men Or a go in a dress with heels

Is this a new rule I've not heard about? Why can a woman not wear trousers to a wedding 🤔

Outofthepan · 29/03/2025 22:23

Not those sandals @Lemoneytrousers You need better shoes to make it look like you’re not off to the beach

These would be better, also on next

I like the trousers, I think they'll be great. Agreed that you need luxurious fabrics to make sure they seem chic rather than casual.

Mylittlebobble · 29/03/2025 22:32

A guest at the last wedding I went to wore patterned trousers, a silk cami and a fabulous hat. She stood out as the most stylish person there imo.

Scutterbug · 29/03/2025 22:32

I think they would be great. Is the wedding summer? I would pair with a white top if so, Gold shoes. gold bag. Chunky gold jewellery.

Apart from the bride, of course! Whoops! 😆

@Lemoneytrousers
Have you any idea of what other guests will need wearing to this wedding? You’ve described it as being a ‘casual barny wedding’. I’m not quite sure what that is but I’m picturing people in gingham frocks, checked shirts and jeans! Whereas you are getting advice in terms of weddings which other people have attended, probably in a posh hotel, where everyone probably wore a phase 8 dress and heels. If you can ascertain from other guests (or the bridal party) if the trousers are suitable then you can probably get more advice as to a top to go with it.

More of a slightly hippy upper middle class country wedding in a barn... I think there will be a wide range of costumes.

I'm pretty sure you can wear trousers to any occasion...

The suggestions so far make me feel it probably is- with a bit of dressing up. Would a white silk t-shirt dress it up enough?

I'm not going to wear a straw fedora but I am very up for a big stylish hat!

Suggestions welcome!

Well in terms of making up an outfit - you could wear a white silk T shirt type top and a plain colour kimono jacket in either the green or the yellow of the trousers. That would look quite nice and ‘put together’ but as I say, you are probably more in a position to know whether it fits the vibe of the wedding than MNers who don’t know the people getting married or their friends.

Gall10 · 30/03/2025 10:57

If the ‘happy couple’ are asking for money as a present….then wear what the hell you like.
if they’re saying no presents at all….i think these trousers with smart wedges & a bit of bling will be perfect!
Guests shouldn’t be expected to spend she’d loads on an outfit for one day.

People saying the trousers look like a table cloth….this looks like a bedspread!

I think for this to work you have to embrace a full-on arty/ boho look. A beige top or blazer would kill it stone dead; you need black, I think, in a luxe finish e.g. silk, with some statement jewellery.

Totally agree. A drapey black silk top. Fabulous accessories.

KnittedFerret · 30/03/2025 11:04

@Gall10 , a little maybe, but I really like it.

MissJeanBrodiesmother · 30/03/2025 11:16

It may well be that by the time you add up the things you would need to make them work, it would have been cheaper and easier to just buy a dress off vinted.

Divebar2021 · 30/03/2025 11:34

They are very far out of my comfort zone but I wouldn’t try and fancy them up with heels.( or black) I’d keep the top really simple… I have a slightly loose creamy white silk shirt from Arket which I’d wear with a few buttons undone and the cuffs undone. A couple of fine gold chains ( or contrast fine coloured beaded necklaces) and some slightly chunky flat sandals maybe with some gold on . A fun clutch with some colour on. I found a picture of these print trousers and I liked the vibe of the overall look which is completely non traditional for a wedding but if the whole event is casual why not.

Is the barn a wedding venue or a working barn, OP? It makes a difference to your shoes and that has knock on effects. It also changes the vibe, potentially quite a lot.

I love the ideas people have for tops, shoes and accessories, but I think that with eg a good silk top and gold sandals, these (cotton?) trousers become the weak link.

If the vibe is super casual - a working barn vibe - I would go with a good cotton top, a linen or raw silk overshirt or jacket, leather sandals or trainers, and quality but casual gold jewellry.

If the barn is a proper wedding venue, I would upgrade the trousers and go from there. Although, BTW, I like them very much!
