Sludge coloured clothes?

Have spent the day at a rather nice club (get me!). It’s very noticeable that everyone, man, woman and child, is wearing clothes in varying shades of olive, khaki, dull pink, grey or beige.

Is this a thing? I am happily wearing a grey jumper and navy jeans: and I feel a bit bright!

It’s all about neutrals and basics.

Lots of people out in washed out oversized joggers and jumpers today. Apparently it’s trendy but looks slobby on most.

TigerDroveAgain · 22/03/2025 16:52

It’s making me feel like I’m in a black and white movie!

They have all been shopping in Uniqlo.

I hate sludgy colours. They just don't suit me at all and make me look washed out and ill.

I wear colours that suit me not colours that are "in fashion"

Summerhillsquare · 22/03/2025 17:14

Its the beige leggings that get me. NO one looks good in those.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 22/03/2025 17:16

There does seem to be two camps this spring - sludge or “dopamine dressers” in bright colours.

i do like neutrals- but there does seem to be a very sludgy version in a lot of shops.

Floisme · 22/03/2025 17:18

I've always liked sludgy colours. Not Uniqlo though - I'd call them insipid rather than sludgy. And not neutrals either. I like a good pondweed.

LeaveALittleNote · 22/03/2025 17:30

I approve of sludge colours. I don’t tend to suit bright colours, though.

madaboutpurple · 22/03/2025 17:31

I like bright colours I don't think sludgy colours do many people any favours.

evilharpy · 22/03/2025 17:32

Team sludge here! Greys and khakis for the win. Although usually with bright neon nails.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/03/2025 17:34

I don’t like brown and brown doesn’t like me. That’s every shade from cream to chocolate. It’s everywhere at the moment.

henlake7 · 22/03/2025 17:34

I feel like grey and navy are just the same as the sludge though....just different basics.

I like the olives and khakis. Autumn colours suit me. I cant do the whole plain greige look though. I need some pattern somewhere!

Comedycook · 22/03/2025 17:35

Your thread title cracked me up op. My dsis and I are always talking about sludge coloured clothes and wondering why they're so popular especially amongst the middle classes 😂

Floisme · 22/03/2025 17:44

Grey and navy the same as sludge?? Shock
Sludge to me means browns and murky greens, maybe a dash of mustard.

And sorry-not-sorry but I've waited nearly 50 years for brown to come back and I'm enjoying every moment.

Airwaterfire · 22/03/2025 17:56

@Floisme Brown had a moment in the “Boho” early 2000s — I had some brown cord skirts and jumpers and it taught me never to wear brown again 😆 it definitely doesn’t suit me!

Floisme · 22/03/2025 17:59

What moment was that? The noughties were grey, grey, grey. I had a wardrobe full of it.

Floisme · 22/03/2025 18:01

Actually yes, I stand corrected, I did buy a very, very dark chocolate brown wrap top at the beginning of the noughties and I've been looking for something similar ever since.

Edited to add: it wasn't sludge brown though.

BeautyBlanche · 22/03/2025 18:07

Team sludge here although agree it doesn’t suit everyone but everyone thinks they can get away with it. No people you cannot!!

Sludge is very unforgiving on the wrong person.

Overhaul54 · 22/03/2025 18:12

Olive and khaki have always been posh well dressed colours.
Brown too is smart but there are some terrible bones out there.
It's the washed out pinks and beiges that look shit on most people..

SuperBlondie28 · 22/03/2025 18:23

I noticed these dingy colours in Asda George. Greys, beige, browns, horrible greens.

Thankfully I'm good for clothing. Buy from Vinted a lot. I suit bright colours. Think electric blue and fuschia pinks! I'm a blue eyed, natural blonde, pale skinned lady.

Brown is back. Or rather “mocha mousse” is as the Pantone colour of 2025.

I wore red today because I just don’t care, and I’m still a bit traumatised from wearing brown in the early noughties.

Floisme · 22/03/2025 17:59

What moment was that? The noughties were grey, grey, grey. I had a wardrobe full of it.

Early to mid 2000s! I had brown knee boots, brown cord skirts, some chocolate brown cardigans from Gap, a brown racer back t-shirt, a cream and brown striped boho skirt, a load of camel and brown jumpers, and for some reason chocolate brown underwear was also big at the time: I had several sets of chocolate brown lace undies, and some chocolate brown satin ones from M&S!

Not sure how you missed the brown! The noughties was all very pink, cream, brown and so on around that time: it was that era when diamanté ruled, and everything was a bit over-decorated. I remember going to a wedding in a pink tulle skirt, a cream cardigan with diamanté buttons, pink satin kitten heels and a pink fascinator. All would be a bit OTT today but I actually looked quite minimalist compared to everyone else. Good times! 😆

RampantIvy · 22/03/2025 19:14

Do people really buy colours that are "in fashion" rather than what suits them?

I'm sure you're right. I had a small child who never slept in the early noughties so I missed quite a bit of it. And when I came to it was skinny jeans and grey everywhere.

LaurieFairyCake · 22/03/2025 19:38

Not in this lovely bright weather
Im wearing a neon wool jacket and bright red jeans

TheOGCCL · 22/03/2025 19:44

Think it’s all part of the minimal trend - co ords, minimal detail, simple shapes - or the related quiet luxury one - where you don’t shout with your clothes. The problem is cheap sludgy clothes miss quiet luxury by a long way.
