Sludge coloured clothes?

TigerDroveAgain · 22/03/2025 16:49

Have spent the day at a rather nice club (get me!). It’s very noticeable that everyone, man, woman and child, is wearing clothes in varying shades of olive, khaki, dull pink, grey or beige.

Is this a thing? I am happily wearing a grey jumper and navy jeans: and I feel a bit bright!

wonders what colour gall bladder sludge is

Pigtailsandall · 22/03/2025 19:48

Oo, I love chocolate brown and absolutely do not think it's sludgy. I think it's a lovely rich colour. Where are people spotting brown things at? (Not beige but brown!) I can never find any

I absolutely agree with the pale pink and odd green tones, though.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 22/03/2025 19:52

I was clothes shopping today and noticed this exact thing OP! Sludge seems to be 'in' this spring! I think it's mirrorring the general mood!

Riversof0tter5 · 22/03/2025 19:56

Sludge being posh may be related to needing to hunt or poach or join Robin Hood in the woodlands without startling the deer or drawing the attention of the Sheriff of Nottingham. See also flat caps.

Its the beige leggings that get me. NO one looks good in those.

I don't care what people wear, to each their own...but must agree on the beige leggings. They look terrible on everyone...even the most toned legs and bum should have chosen a different pair of leggings.

It's weird because people who wear them can see them on other people who wear them and know how bad they look, yet they still wear them.
No sympathy.

glitterturd · 22/03/2025 20:06

Even my husband commented on this today in the male department of stores! 😂

henlake7 · 22/03/2025 20:08

I love chocolate brown and olive greens but I'm surprised they are a spring thing....they Def feel more autumn to me.
Khaki, grey and beige have been around for a while though surely? Isn't it all part of that classic neutral looks? (Always feels less like a look to me and more like a lack of imagination TBH).

Do people really buy colours that are "in fashion" rather than what suits them?

It’s really hard to buy colours that suit you if they’re not in fashion.

They have all been shopping in Uniqlo.

I hate sludgy colours. They just don't suit me at all and make me look washed out and ill.

I wear colours that suit me not colours that are "in fashion"

Everyone raves on here about Uniqlo, so when one opened in our town I thought I'd go and have a look. No colour, no pattern, no thank you!

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 22/03/2025 20:50

Another who likes sludgy colours no colour colours although I like to think of them as -ish colours - greyish, beige-ish, greenish etc. etc. They always work with neutral colours, and often wear them with a much brighter colour usually an accessory, although sometimes a sweater.

Sunnytoday01 · 22/03/2025 20:54

I can’t wear sludge myself. It doesn’t suit me. Today I was in bright red and yesterday I was in bright pink.

I noticed several people wearing cream today. It looked nice but also doesn’t particularly suit me.

Gymbunny2025 · 22/03/2025 20:56

Love sludge 😂 I don’t think I ever wear bright colours or pastels

Beesandhoney123 · 22/03/2025 20:58

I'm not wearing sludge colours, I'm not in the army!

So true 😂 I could easily camouflage if the situation required!

Zebracat · 22/03/2025 21:08

I wore my new apple green jumper yesterday, only to realise as I played Gooey Louie that it was, in fact , snot coloured. Pond sludge might be better.

nothouseproud · 22/03/2025 21:18

As someone with olive skin I'm loving the chocolate browns, ivory, forest greens etc. Not the pinky browns or greyish greens tho.

VWT5 · 22/03/2025 21:20

i do think there is something about sludge colours looking good in our particular UK light conditions (only noticed this as a coincidence when I saw some old photos and observed how oddly flattering the colours looked).

Similarly, it might just be me, but I look at some of the colours in the Landsend Catalogue (USA) …those strange peach tea/washed out toothpaste mint colours - and they all just look strange to me - in our UK lighting. I don’t see anyone wearing those strange shades.

Wearing bright brights in the sun and on holiday, (currently prancing around anonymously in a white floral thing in a resort) - but looking forward to flattering sludgy again when I return to Gatwick 😂

DP suits sludge but I don’t. I’m not interested in wearing what everyone else is wearing though. I know what suits me and happy to march to the beat of my own drum!

itsleviosa · 23/03/2025 02:49

I quite like sludgy colours - as a redhead who doesn’t wear red, pink, orange or yellow! Or white or cream. Maybe I should have said what colours I do wear Blush
Love most shades of green and blue and brown tends to look ok on me

Me too.

I'm not a fan of sludge. It makes me think of dystopian films where everyone's wearing hemp clothing that looks like it's never been washed. But I am fond of the colour sometimes called "clay", that dusty pale, earthy colour that can have a hint of pink. I love browns, oranges and greens, but I like them to sing a bit, show some zest. I went out yesterday in a green gingham dress with a bright rusty jacket and was definitely one of the more colourful ones.

That's an interesting point about the light and I think similar might apply to parts of the UK landscape. I recently treated myself to some Scottish knitwear and I went for colours that some posters will hate because they reminded me of the Highlands. And if you go to the Outer Hebrides you can see all around you where a lot of the Harris Tweed colours come from.

Of course!
There was the neon trend in the 80’s ( after the turquoise and bright pink trend), there’s been orange and brights in the late 90’s. Everything got a bit refined in the 2000’s - navy, blue and white were go to colours at one point and now sludge.

I used to - hence remembering very well all the brown clothes that I had circa 2005! Someone introduced me to the idea of the colour seasons around 10 years ago and I’ve now got a coordinated wardrobe - which doesn’t include sludge colours, although I do suit a silvery grey.
