Lipstick recommendations

I am looking for a bit of a holy grail lipstick. Something to wear every day. I don’t suit Matt lipsticks but I dont want a gloss. I want more colour than a tinted balm but I don’t suit a strong pop of colour (regardless of what that colour is).

so I think what I want is a hydrating lipstick which is sheer but buildable. I have a couple of wonderskin tints which dry my lips out a bit too much. I spent half an hour in space nk yesterday working through Lisa Eldridge (I had such high hopes!) but all the colours I tried came out way too dark or too cool.

colour wise I have warm undertones and high contrast (grey hair). My natural lips are fairly pigmented which I think was the issue with Lisa Eldridge. Black Honey also goes too dark.

I am after a kind of pinky rose I think, not too brown though. I have an ok colour from Bobbi brown but it’s a bit too Matt and a bit too natural. For all I don’t suit that bright pop of colour, I do want something bold.

budget wise I’m fairly flexible. This will be worn most days so happy to spend if required.

Charlotte Tilbury's Pillow Talk is the one people generally recommend - I don't have it myself (prefer the L'Oréal Colour Riche 520 dupe). She's done so well out of Pillow Talk that she's released it in various hues, fair, medium, intense, etc.

Mac Teddy is also meant to be good, possibly ?That one comes in warm or cool.

Merit have a range of sheer lip products that can be applied in layers - there are some sheer brown ones that are nice, like Tiger (comes out reddish) or 1990.

In the end you just have to try them on yourself, because they can look so different from how they look in the tube.

I’ve fallen in love with Lisa Eldridge lucent lipsticks (or something like that), they’re really hydrating, buildable so easy for me to rush to swipe on sitting in traffic on my way to work - can be as sheer or as opaque as the look you want. But most importantly they’re juicy and not drying. Bloody love them, I’ve got several dotted about the place (including one in my car!).

Something like this?

Obviously I’m not picking a colour for you - but wonderful lipsticks across a range of textures and levels of colour strength, so you should be able to find something you love. And virtual trying on. And ridiculously pretty. Star

I just recently bought the YSL loveshine and I'm absolutely in love with it. It was recommended on here in another post. It looks like a gloss but goes on like a lipstick and it's not sticky at all. I've definitely converted to this, will be buying more colours

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/03/2025 10:15

Mac Teddy is nice.

Otherwise I’d go to the Chanel counter and ask for help.

unsync · 22/03/2025 10:25

Clarins Lip Perfector. It's not a stick in the traditional sense, but it gives great hydration and good coverage. I have a similar colouring to you and I love them. I always have one in my pocket (it comes in a tube so no melting worries either).

Ahhhh thanks so much. I need to head to a department store and try them on I know but it’s more the formula I wanted recommendations for.

the Gucci cases are very pretty and I found a nice colour in the virtual try on (mae coral) so that’s on the list.

A possible budget option are the ELF glossy lip stain. They're reasonably pigmented, not sticky and leave a good coating of colour. They are not drying. I like the Power mauve, Basic beige and Spicy Sienna. I also have warm tones and pigmented lips.

PoppyBaxter · 22/03/2025 11:16

Sellout by Mac.

It's my daily and the perfect sophisticated neutral pink, and has the perfect level of shine.

WrinklesShminkles · 22/03/2025 12:31

Glossier Ultralip which is less shiny than it appears on their website. You can try it in Space NK.

myladyjane · 22/03/2025 12:32

Thanks for these - I have had a lovely time doing some virtual trying on. So far top of my list are the clarins and the Gucci. Also a MAC in the formula you suggested @PoppyBaxterbut a slightly darker shade than I would have picked.

appreciate the virtual try one are no substitute for a real try out but helpful as a place to start.

Ha! Post-global virus I rarely try cosmetics in shops these days. And only if I’m almost the only customer in the shop (very quiet times at the Tom Ford in Covent Garden, say). Apart from lipstick almost everything on my face is delivered via Cult Beauty.

ducksinarow123 · 22/03/2025 14:02

I wear MAC brave. I found velvet teddy too dark on me (but it looks amazing on my dd). Brave is a bit pinker

Birdy65 · 22/03/2025 14:39

Blushing nude by Clinique is my go to everyday lipstick. Very hydrating and a lovely pinky rose colour with nude/brown undertones.

Back21970 · 22/03/2025 15:33

I love Chanel lipsticks and if you are flush definitely go to a counter and try on a few.

Their website does give quite good descriptions of the shades too, so worth a look first.

I’m always looking out for budget alternatives so think I’ll try Elf next time I’m at the shops as see a lot of great reviews for them.

Onanotherhealthkick · 22/03/2025 16:39

I looked for Clinique black honey dupes and found a Boots 17 tinted lip balm for under £4 and it is my everyday go to nowadays - I couldn’t believe it actually,
it’s called 17 Tinted Lip Butter 010 2.5g

BeaLola · 22/03/2025 16:57

I am in the minority in that I don't like PillowTalk by Charlotte Tilbury.

My standards are No 7 Toffee in the Clarins Lip Perfector,

Sandwash Pink by Bobbi Brown (although on line recent purchasers seem to indicate it's changed , I've not bought one in ages)

Chanel Coco - one of the new balm type - can't recall the colour though

nellylemonade · 22/03/2025 17:18

Find a Chantecaille and try some of theirs, so soft and moisturising. Beautiful natural colours. They do cost a bomb but so worth it.

AdoraBell · 22/03/2025 17:22

I like Chanel lipsticks, my favourite shade is Cecile, number 432. My DD - early twenties- said it looks like my lips, but better.

MichaelandKirk · 22/03/2025 17:57

Glossier lipsticks are lovely

BeautyBlanche · 22/03/2025 18:00

Lisa Eldridge lipsticks are the best I’ve found. I adore epanoui for everyday wear.

silverandsparklez · 22/03/2025 18:01
