Browsing the beauty counters, is it too much to ask to be left alone to browse in peace?

I know that SA’s have to make sales targets etc. but it’s so off putting when I am browsing and just want to do it in peace. It quite literally puts me off buying.

Go to a really big boots. They have revamped their beauty departments. Tonnes of brands, far fewer SA and make up mirror stations with sinks, cleansers etc, and daylight settings on the mirrors. Yes, I did get approached but SA was very helpful then left me alone to play.

I'm in Scotland BTW.

Our Boots are like it too, tumbleweed zones, virtually no staff to be found, I find it a depressing experience, but I've always like the human interaction aspect of shopping.

This happened to me in Space NK the other day whilst I was with my DD9, she is going through a skincare phase so she was asking the shop assistant all sorts - it kept them away from hassling me so I could shop in peace and she left the store with around 15 free samples 😅

They're doing their job, give them a break. Retail staff can’t get it right according to MN. Helpful and they’re seen as pushy. Leave you alone and they’re rude and inattentive.

When I want to browse before I buy or just browse I am not left alone but woe betide me if I actually want to buy anything!! Totally ignored then!!!

I say I am browsing then they proceed to tell me stuff about the product. Surely they could say if you need any help just ask. I would have thought that is more than reasonable.

Yip, every time. If you pick up a product 'oh what moisturiser are you currently using?' etc and it would be rude not to answer. I just avoid them, do my research online and buy there.

If I say 'I'm just browsing thank you' and then get left alone it's fine, but I have had occasions where they continued to try the sales thing with me and I got stressed and left. I think good sales assistants will sense if somebody wants help or not.

Gnomegarden32 · 20/03/2025 15:50

Ps Obviously sometimes it's just company policy and it's not the assistants' fault.

@Hayley1256 I think I need to borrow a 9-year old to take with me next time!
