What have you tried on in a shop that you had no intention of buying?

Have you ever worn a certain dress in a shop just for the sake of it.

Nothing. I can barely be arsed with the hassle of changing rooms and stripping off for stuff i actually want never mind stuff i don’t want. 😁

Yup, wedding dress shopping. Tried on a meringue style dress, looked like a pudding and took it straight off again!

I had to see if it would work despite my misgivings that it wouldn't and I was right.

Goodness - that was my entire youth and young / young middle adulthood! I pretty much lived in Harvey Nichols (and everywhere similar in London, and other major cities) from 1980 onwards until online browsing took over.

Did / do other people not do this?

How else would you learn about clothes?

But why do you ask?

AsIUnderstandIt · 16/03/2025 19:29

Pink beaded trousers and a huge pink flouncy balloon sleeved top- from Sister Jane in John Lewis. It was like an outrageous Strictly costume.

Also wedding dress shopping - a fishtailed, puffed off-the-shoulder, rhinestoned number that Diana Ross might have rejected for being too gaudy - because I could. It was magnificent in its opulence- it would have been a case of the dress wearing me, than me wearing the dress. Plus I couldn’t move my knees so would have had to shuffle down the aisle like Morticia Adams (then change for the evening or not be able to do a first dance), but on reflection, perhaps I should have gone full diva for my wedding.

I always go and see what samples they have in the chocolate shops in the arndale even if I have no intention of buying anything. Is that the same?

Floisme · 16/03/2025 19:49

I've done it all my life, most recently a 1940s/50s new look style dress in Moygashell linen. If I'd had a wedding to go to, I'd have bought it. I still think about it.

It's the thing I miss most about the demise of real shops.

A 4 carat diamond solitaire.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/03/2025 19:55

Not me but my DD2 is tall and slender so me and DD1 always encourage her to try on stuff which looks totally mad on the hanger and she always looks great in it. It's a lot of fun.

Everything in Tammy Girl, most Saturdays from about 1993 to 1996

BrennieGirl · 16/03/2025 19:58

Years ago a wedding dress in Harrods.

and more recently a 10k watch in Chanel.

Oh also a 50k diamond ring in Tiffany in New York.

MrsMoastyToasty · 16/03/2025 20:02

Friend and I have been "wedding dress and bridesmaid dress shopping". Both of us were already married.

Stillwearingskinnies · 16/03/2025 21:33

A leather jacket in Whistles that's £449
Luckily it looked ridiculous on me

Tafelberg · 16/03/2025 21:46

I often do this so I know what size to buy something in on Vinted etc - tried on a couple of Ganni blouses this weekend (£165 each new) for this exact purpose. Hoping to find them much cheaper second-hand!

AprilF00L · 16/03/2025 22:25

I did that when I was 14 years old...so a long time ago. Don't really want to try on clothes in shops now due to creepy men in women face coming in to our changing rooms.

notarealgreendress · 17/03/2025 01:44

Oh, I hate trying on clothes in shops. 9 times out of 10 the mirrors are awful and the lighting unflattering and I shuffle out feeling depressed. In fact, I only really do it for jeans, and that's because I have to. Anything else, I can pretty much gauge by looking at it if it'll fit.

NormasArse · 17/03/2025 02:45

Funny coats in TKMaxx

I tried on a $1,000,000 diamond ring in Tiffany New York. I asked what was the most expensive ring in the store and even though he knew I had no intention of buying it (or the means to), he let me try it on anyway. I have to say though it was pretty ugly, I'd never have bought it even if I had all the money in the world
