Lightweight Down Coat for Travelling

RockGirl · 16/03/2025 18:40

Hi all

I am looking for something lightweight that I can stick in a suitcase, but still warm enough. In the past I used to wear my down Rab coat, but it is 10 years old now and has seen better days. I looked at replacing it, but it is certainly a lot more ££££ than when I bought one.

I am looking at either the long version of the Berghaus Talmine or the Berghaus Nula (can't actually tell much difference between them).

Would really appreciate some recommendations.

I’ve always been very happy with Uniqlo down coats, pack up very small too and lightweight.

ThePoshUns · 16/03/2025 19:07

I second Uniqlo. Depends where you are going. I’m in Spain at the moment and have a lightweight Uniqlo jacket that packs down into a small bag in its pocket. Useful and warm. I layered it under a waterproof coat when it was raining today.

Yes I love Uniqlo too. Although I find their coats a bit shapeless. Any specific ones? I tried the Berghaus one and it was nice and fitted.

How about a Rab non down one? I have a Rab Alpine down which I wrecked when washing it and was so hacked off I got the non down version. It’s very lightweight and packable still with the added bonus of I can wash it with impunity….and it’s cheaper!

I have a long landsend down jacket which is fantastic, plus I got it at a stupid bargain of £16 down from £200odd. But it packs down wonderfully and is lovely and warm

I love my down jacket from Decathlon. Reasonably priced, nice shaping, packs up small but puffs up well and is very warm.

That’s very Rab like and a great price.

I used this jacket when going from a snowy UK in Dec, long haul to hot Sydney. It packs up and fit into a tiny pocket in my backpack, yet is incredibly light and warm. It also has a hidden hood if needed. They might have a longer version if preferred.

I have this from Weird Fish www.weirdfish.co.uk/p/women/i/eshka-lightweight-padded-jacket-tarragon-202998

I love it so much that I have just bought another one in the sale (extra 25% off sale price SALE25) and £1 delivery. I ordered it on Friday night and it arrived this morning.

The tarragon colour looks great with black clothes or blue denim. It's so warm, I wore it on a subzero night out with just a tshirt underneath. It's really lightweight, was able to tie it round my waist at a gig without it looking bulky. The hood is a great size and goes properly over the head instead of leaving your face sticking out. I honestly cannot recommend it highly enough.

Edited to hopefully fix link!

Another vote for uniqlo

RockGirl · 21/03/2025 09:02

I have to say I checked out the M&S one and it’s really nice, but I would prefer if it had a hood (even better if it was a hidden one).

I was the one that recommended the M&S, foldway jacket. I bought mine last year and it does indeed have a hidden hood in the collar! Hidden into a little zip up pocket. Its so discreet, that I only realised it had a hood a few months ago!

I checked the label and the code is T49 4179/04173. Strangely, its a different code to the one I linked from their website, so can only assume they have changed the design slightly. You might find one at their outlet stores, or by ringing customer services.

RockGirl · 21/03/2025 17:51

I did check but couldn't see one. Will need to have another look! :)
