Hey all my hair is getting thinner and pretty sure I’m starting to recede! I’m 38 but just feel much older lately. My skin has suddenly aged my hair is thinning i feel like im just looking dull and drawn.

I have a 4 year old and i think the broken sleep has taken its toll on me.

any tips please? Hair shampoos etc to help? Skin care? Vitamins?

we eat a pretty healthy diet with the exception of a takeaway and eating out in the weekends. I drink water I don’t drink a great deal of alcohol!

I need more confidence… help please!!

Hey OP - I’m sure someone will come along soon with vitamin recommendations etc, but my hair has thinned considerably over the past six months and I’ve been using the kerastase thickening shampoo and conditioner. It last AGES makes your hair look fab, and even my hairdresser commented on the improvement. Good luck x

I would definitely get your bloods checked if you can. I'm perimenopausal and my hair definitely thinned, I've found that iron and high strength vitamin d has really helped.

Good luck i know how distressing it feels when you realise.

Pickled21 · 16/03/2025 05:02

I could have written this and have an appointment next week to speak to the nurse and get bloods done. I've taken some steps by using a silk pillow, washing less frequently and when I do using the living proof brand which my hair seems to like. I also use the Philip Kingsley hair tretament on my hair once a week (deep conditioning mask).I tie my hair up less, so only really for work now . Eating plenty of fruit and veg, I take iron and an over the counter vit D already.

@Nandorsknee ehich one is it, just looked and there’s a few to choose from? It’s pricey so want to get it right. How long before you noticed change?

@jacksonlambsregulardisorder would you
mind saying your age and if your experiencing any other symptoms? I have been thinking perimenopause. I had bloods done a few months ok and normal. But I may go back.

@Pickled21 yes I feel like I’m doing what I can. I did start taking wellwomen but wondered if it was interrupting my sleep? So stopped. My hair gets so greasy and I’m looking so drawn I was it every other day so I can wear it down then up once. By the 3rd day it’s stuck to my head.

I’ve been using hairburst shampoo

densifique - it’s pricey but lasts for ages

DecafDodger · 16/03/2025 07:44

minoxidil is scientifically proven to help with hair loss. You don't need the more expensive 'women's' version, just a generic 5%

Powderblue1 · 16/03/2025 08:35

Minoxidil 5% foam apply nightly (men’s version) and have your ferritin levels checked. It should be at least 100 to maintain hair, any less and it will fall out.

jacksonlambsregulardisorder · 16/03/2025 08:56

I'm 49 so definitely peri! The range for iron particularly is misleading, I'm in the normal range but seem to naturally be in the waiting room for anaemia. I genuinely feel better since starting a fairly low level iron supplement.

Don't underestimate vitamin d either, it's been a really long, gloomy winter. Your levels will be low.

I'm still tempted to try the minoxidil.

putitdown356 · 16/03/2025 09:01

Minoxidil has transformed my hair, I buy it from Boots or Amazon . Works out at about £10 per month.
I was in my car one day and glanced in mirror and could see my scalp as the sun was shining on it, I would say my hair has now increased by about 30/40 % in thickness where it was thinning.

putitdown356 · 16/03/2025 09:05

Meant to add I use Head and shoulders a couple of times a week as the zinc clears the hair follicles so the Minoxidil is fully absorbed, this was told to me by a Dermatologist .

Champo is meant to help

Fightingtobepositive · 16/03/2025 20:10

Thanks all. Lots of good advice ☺️
@jacksonlambsregulardisorder I tried vit d at the beginning of winter and found it interrupted my sleep. I had busy legs and all sorts so stopped. Maybe I’ll try again xxp
