Going from slim jeans to wide

I’ve worn skinny/slim cut jeans for years. I’d like to try some wide leg jeans. I ordered these wide & straight fit pair from Uniqlo…. and just feel a bit ridiculous. They fit around the waist but would need to be taken up on the leg (short legs). Do they look awful? Ignore the vest it’s just to show the waist. I don’t like clothes shopping at the best of times and new jeans shopping is the worst! I’m late 40’s and not sure I can face going back to 90’s bootcut either.

If you really like slim leg jeans then maybe stick to slim straight. Wide legs are still very much on trend but slimmer styles are back on the agenda so maybe just stay closer to your comfort zone.

As for these Uniqlo jeans, I think they are slightly too high waisted for you. I love high waisted jeans but I think they look best when they are very snug up top and a wide flared leg or slim leg. I think this sort of in between leg and slightly relaxed fit around the body ends up looking a bit like a bloke on a building site

stolenlullabies · 04/03/2025 16:39

Thanks, bloke on a building site is fairly accurate 😆

I think they look absolutely fine. If you're used to a skinny or slim leg then they're bound to feel a bit weird at first. You could try a belt to emphasise the waist if you want a bit more shape.

psuedocream3 · 04/03/2025 17:07

I think they are really nice personally, they aren't overly wide like some. I am looking for a good pair myself, and it's a minefield unless you can try them on in person I think.

But, if you don't love them, I wouldn't buy just because they are on trend. I read today bootleg is returning, and I'm definitely not jumping on that bandwagon.

happyharpy78 · 04/03/2025 17:20

I'm in the same position as you, felt I was stuck in my skinny jeans rut. I went to M and S and tried on a whole load this weekend. Wide leg looked and felt daft on me, bootcut I felt a bit frumpy on (mainly because I wore them first time round!) but their slim flare felt a nice compromise. Remains to be seen how often I wear them now!

TheOGCCL · 04/03/2025 17:25

I think they look nice. It is an adjustment, even just the weight as more material = heavier. Also if they are too long they are not practical in the rain or drag along the pavement and get torn.

I think the big palazzo/super baggy jeans and the barrel are trends and will die away eventually but loose is more classic.

stolenlullabies · 04/03/2025 17:36

Uniqlo do an altering service. These are 29 inch but I usually have 27-28 inch. I only ever wear flat shoes so I’m thinking 27-28 would be ok. These 29 are pretty long and dragging on the ground (on tallest tiptoes for side pic!)

You need to put them on with the shoes/boots you will be wearing and a wide belt.

With chunky soled trainers or boots, a belt and short jacket I think they'll look fab.

Chewbecca · 04/03/2025 17:38

I think they look just right. Have you tried with shoes / boots? They're supposed to be long.

Candleabra · 04/03/2025 17:39

I think they look good

TheMorels · 04/03/2025 17:43

I think they look great. Try them on with a flatform or chunky trainer and I bet you’ll love.

I’m only a year into my transition from skinnies, but honestly, they look so very dated now. Wide legs and flared all the way.

hby9628 · 04/03/2025 17:59

They look really nice. I have recently embraced wide legged jeans they are so comfy. I love them

JustLikeThatBluebird · 04/03/2025 18:04

I think they look good. Definitely try them with shoes before making any decisions on having them taken up.

stolenlullabies · 04/03/2025 18:13

Ok, found a belt and put some trainers on

Much better, but I still think there’s a bit too much of them round the body.

These are a bit of a different prospect with the tie, so not right if you want ‘smart’, but I’m really liking these M&S ones.

Imo they don't need shortening at all.
Bit the trouble with wide jeans when you are short of that they make you look a bit square shaped. I think a lower waist would also suit you more

stolenlullabies · 04/03/2025 18:28

Yes I’ve been wearing Levi’s skinnies/slim cut slightly lower waist for years. They are so comfortable for me, more so than even leggings. I don’t have a very long body, I’m quite short all over really. These Uniqlo are growing on me and my 12yr old DD didn’t pull a face either so that’s also a good sign 😆

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 04/03/2025 18:29

, I think they give you no shape and actually make you look bigger than you are.

I have a pair of wide flares and a pair of girlfriend and both make me look bigger (I don't need help with that), they may be comfortable and on trend but I look better in my skinny jeans.

I’m also wearing slim flares. I like wide leg trousers, but for some reason wide leg jeans look a bit ‘fancy dress’ on me!

fatandhappyxxx · 04/03/2025 18:39

Try halara jeans they're life-changing

TheLemonOtter · 04/03/2025 18:43

I actually think they look really nice, relaxed and i think fresh/modern- can't quite find the word!

mewkins · 04/03/2025 19:06

These look nice. Try them on with a belt and trainers or whatever you plan to wear with them and a few spring tops and see if you can get used to them. It's just not what you're used to but they fit you well.
