How come Shein has a such pretty clothes?

Please note I’m talking about the patterns and style- NOT the quality.

I get lots of adverts on FB and Insta and I must say I love lots of their clothes how they look- I hardly ever shop there, very rarely, as I know the quality is not good.
How come the clothes look so pretty?
All these patterned quilted jackets, denim jackets, bright t shirts, dresses, lots of different bags…
If I walk into any high street clothes shop, all I can see it boring oversized or cropped hoodies and ugly bottoms, all in boring minimalist colours like black or grey or white.

The actual answer is their business model - Shein has technology that tracks the latest fashions people are buying/search for and immediately prints/creates them to be sold. I think it's something like same day turnaround for creating new garments.

Normal clothing companies take months and months - and don't respond to the tech of what people are looking at/buying at that very moment.

I've probably butchered that explanation, but you can Google how their fashion process works - it's fascinating, and why they're so successful

madaboutpurple · 02/03/2025 17:24

They will have researched what people want. I must admit I haven't looked at their website yet.

Thank you. That makes sense really. Anytime I am on Shein I’m always taken away with the huge selection of everything..
What I buy there is their phone cases, they are so cheap and fit so well to my phone , plus again so bright and lots to choose from.

Is this an ad???

for balance: Shein is a pile of immoral, planet choking shite made by women who sacrifice their health and childhood to be paid a pittance.

HermioneWeasley · 02/03/2025 18:41

I am deeply skeptical about how things look in reality vs their ads

Its awful practice isnt it - I really don’t see the appeal, once in one’s hands.

Morality aside - has anyone ever not been able to spot a Temu/Shein/Cider type dress? Its always immediately obvious to me, usually by the way its printed on one side, lining, or off centred patterns.

Hairisbad · 02/03/2025 18:55

Our DD bought her bridesmaids dresses from shein.

Bridesmaids dresses were fully lined just needed turning up by quite a few inches.
And they were close to the correct size.
Everyone who came to the wedding were complementary about them.

Comedycook · 02/03/2025 18:57

I agree op. I wish you could buy those types of styles but in a better quality

MinnieCoops · 02/03/2025 19:01

My cousin has a dress company. They stole all her designs and produced with with cheap labour and shit materials.

Octavia64 · 02/03/2025 19:02

Yeah.

I see the ads and think I'd actually really like that but I know it'll look shit in real life. Not to mention the ethics.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 02/03/2025 19:04

Yes, their clothes are great and you just can't see them in the shops.

I bought a long dress from there a few years ago and I get compliments every time I wear it. One of my friends (who spends a lot on nice clothes) was very surprised appalled that it was from Shein when she asked where I'd bought it.

This. I don’t know (or care) how they get their purdy patterns, but as soon as I see something is from Shein, I’m out.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 02/03/2025 19:11

They just lift other designers photos as well, the item you get isn't going to be exactly the same as the photo.

MumGuilt101 · 02/03/2025 19:13

I use Shein quite a lot. I find the quality a mixed bag. Some of it is crap. But some of it is really great. You just need to go in with your eyes open.

I buy jeans for the kids on there, they love them and they last a good while. The shops are crap just now.

Highlandhardrain · 02/03/2025 19:14

According to a Channel 4 investigation, workers supplying Shein were paid as little as 3p per garment. So no, I don't think their clothes are great.

GooseberryBeret · 02/03/2025 19:21

I think when you buy clothes on the high street there’s a chance they could have been made by underpaid workers labouring in shitty conditions. If you buy from Shein it’s 100% guaranteed they’ve been made by underpaid workers labouring in shitty conditions. I won’t even buy their stuff off Vinted, it makes me feel icky.

They rip of independent designers and artists. I've seen posts from amazing small scale independent producers who've had their work ripped off there.

I've heard they don't even process returns they just landfill them.

My daughters buy quite a bit from Shein. Most of the items they have got are good quality. They always have reviews to check and returns are so easy. I have got some lovely dresses from there. I got one to wear to a wedding last year and I kept being complimented on it. The wigs are really good too. My daughter also got some amazing knee high boots the other day. Great as all the shoe shops have closed down now

SoloSofa24 · 02/03/2025 19:26

Just try googling 'Shein stole my designs' - so many stories of them not only copying independent creators' designs, but even using photos stolen from them to advertise the Shein knock-offs, which of course are much lower quality and do not look like the photos.

Winterymix · 02/03/2025 19:27

Agree previous posters - there's a huge issue with them just ripping off independent designers without giving them any credit or paying to use their IP. I won't use them because of it (+ obvious sustainability/manufacturing issues)

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 02/03/2025 19:29

I’ve got stuff from SHEIN that I’ve had for 5+ years. The only time I find quality dodge is with their sweatshirts.

I’m a bigger size and there’s nowhere else for me to shop. I want nice colours and nice prints.

The only clothes shops in my area are supermarkets and Next. The quality is worse than SHEIN and I expect the working conditions are just as bad.

I’m actually not buying any clothes this year (No Buy 2025) so my opinion is moot.

SouthernTip · 02/03/2025 19:29

‘Pretty’ because they are copies of designer items. Pictures stolen/copied/AI enhanced.

They are nothing like the photo when they arrive.

Awful quality, awful fabrics, treat their workers like slaves (including children), damage the environment by transporting their rubbish across the world, dump the surplus in landfill and damage the UK high street too.

Hey! What’s not to like? 😵‍💫🤯😡

Bigfishes · 02/03/2025 19:32

Go on the shein website click on a dress. Then look at the photos and reviews of what the actual garment looks like on the buyers. He low quality can be absolutely staggering. Not all, but a lot. The photos of what they are selling is very often nothing like what you get.

I’m not saying they weren’t nice dresses but I don’t think anyone in their right mind would have turned around and said anything derogatory about the bridal party outfits within earshot of them!!
