How come Shein has a such pretty clothes?

Please note I’m talking about the patterns and style- NOT the quality.

I get lots of adverts on FB and Insta and I must say I love lots of their clothes how they look- I hardly ever shop there, very rarely, as I know the quality is not good.
How come the clothes look so pretty?
All these patterned quilted jackets, denim jackets, bright t shirts, dresses, lots of different bags…
If I walk into any high street clothes shop, all I can see it boring oversized or cropped hoodies and ugly bottoms, all in boring minimalist colours like black or grey or white.

I see the adverts and clothes colleagues have bought, I get tempted by the prints more than the prices.
But I just can't bring myself to buy from Shein and Temu. I can't accept the conditions the workers are in.
It's modern day slavery.
I'm not wealthy so I don't have a lot of options but I even avoid Primark who had sweat shops in Manchester a few years ago.
I buy less but higher quality items that will last.

I’m the same. I just buy second hand, got a beautiful reiss jacket for a tenner delivered. I’ve got some great charity shops near me.

i tend to stick to the brands I know what size I am. I have been known to go into the shops of new brands and try a few bits on to double check and then I’m sorted.

SnoopysHoose · 02/03/2025 21:10

@suburburban
The clothes tend to last though so can be worn or sold on.
The point is the ethics , Seasalt lasting longer but having 2/5 rating isn't much better than Shein

Brefugee · 02/03/2025 21:11

IP theft
stop using them

SnoopysHoose · 02/03/2025 21:12

No point buying these brands arcing hand when their origin was crappy.

Yes I take your point 😀

I buy things like T shirts & pyjamas from Shein, most of my T shirts I bought in the first lockdown & they still look like brand new, they come out of the dryer & are crease free within minutes of being hung up. I wouldn't buy anything I expected to last for years or wear every day, but for things like holidays, their stuff is ideal. I know their ethics aren't good, but nor are places like Next or M & S, unless you are prepared to play ££££ for stuff you can more or less guarantee your stuff is made by cheap foreign labour.

unsync · 02/03/2025 21:27

Everything is ripped off from original designers, fabrics, clothing designs - lots of small, independent designers really suffer at the hands of Shein and Temu. Then of course, there's what happens to your data, which is actually the valuable thing and why their product is cheap.

5128gap · 02/03/2025 21:36

I have a cardigan from Shein that I was bought as a gift. Its on its third year now and gets worn at least once a fortnight. I was also given a couple of summer dresses from there by a friend who had ordered the wrong size and couldn't be bothered to return. They're really lovely. If it wasn't for the ethical issues I'd be all over it.

Nah, that is just an excuse. These companies are far, far worse than the companies our popular brands use.

Our high street companies also bring jobs to our highstreets.

BeardofHagrid · 02/03/2025 21:46

Most of the items do not live up to the picture. Some of the ones I bought said 100% cotton in the item specifics, then when they arrived they were polyester per the label. They do not give a fuck. The goal is just to keep you buying. All of their photos are very “juiced”.

not being paid a living wage vs 3p an item (or not paid at all for an item)

not doing enough for greenhouse gases vs being shipped around the world individually, then returned and dumped in landfill

no company is perfect, but we all have choices

FredaFox · 02/03/2025 22:01

@BourbonsAreOverated I'm the same. I buy more expensive items second hand.
Being a bigger size already restricted in some shops with polyester tat but when I buy myself clothes I prefer quality items over fast fashion.

Fast fashion as well as the ethics of the sweat shops & design stealing is also one reason the high street is dying.

MsCactus · 02/03/2025 22:19

EnjoythemoneyJane · 02/03/2025 19:53

This all day long.

Appalling company. It’s easy to rape the planet and abuse your workforce and still make ‘pretty’ looking online images for all your polyester landfill shite.

The expensive clothes companies do this too!

I’ve tried SHEIN a few times and have lucked out a couple of times and have a few things which were great, but the majority of the time they’re such awful quality/material I’ve decided to stop.

But I’ve really struggled to find the types of clothes I like on other websites. Shien has so much that I like in terms of shapes and patterns. Nowhere else competes. It’s probably because I’m not very fashionable and I like what I like lol. But I wish I could get SHEIN designs from better quality places!

Raynexxbow · 02/03/2025 22:34

Highlandhardrain · 02/03/2025 19:14

According to a Channel 4 investigation, workers supplying Shein were paid as little as 3p per garment. So no, I don't think their clothes are great.

And how much would they earn if they didn't have that job? They're creating jobs for people who would otherwise starve to death

CarobyBlobs · 02/03/2025 22:44

They use actual slaves so get out of here with that bollocks.

they’re a multi billion dollar company there is no excuse

And most uk suppliers are not much better.

3smallpups · 02/03/2025 23:28

I know exactly what you mean, see ads for really unusual nice clothes, then realise it's Chinese rubbish. But you can't actually buy those styles anywhere else, it's weird

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 03/03/2025 01:15

I don't think they do look pretty. I scrolled past about 30 dresses -none of them anything I want to own.

I really dislike the way they are styled- all heels and over blown hair and that daft posing pulling the skirt of dresses up.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 03/03/2025 07:04

They have some really nice looking skirts, you wouldn't find anything like that on the high street. The patterns say summer, unlike the offerings on the high street.

Never shopped there but do look at the skirts (and tops) and wish the high street would realise we don't all want sludgey coloured or ditsy printed in the summer. Some people want bright, bold patterns.

They seem to have a good selection of sandals but I only wear leather sandals (as my feet don't sweat in leather) so I just look and wish the high street would make something similar.

AIthenamesaregone · 03/03/2025 07:08

they steal designs and in reality the clothes are terrible quality

ThePoshUns · 03/03/2025 07:33

My friend buys from Shein and always looks great but she is very stylish anyway.
I just won't buy from them for ethical reasons.

Glitchymn1 · 03/03/2025 07:58

Some of the clothes are exactly like the photo, the quality is better than primark and the reviews are excellent. I’m not going to compare it with Reiss or Hobbs as there’s a slight massive price difference.
I’ve got friends who will buy a few things each season from Shein to carry them through- they can’t afford the extra to shop at more expensive retail outlets. They don’t have the time to trawl charity shops looking for a dress, or top.

I wholeheartedly agree that they are unethical though, I wouldn’t buy from them for that reason. But friends will say that shein job is saving them from a worse fate, the sex industry etc. I don’t get involved as it all gets a bit emotive.

Pumpkincozynights · 03/03/2025 08:04

I haven’t bought anything from them but I’ve cone across people who have. My experience is the stuff looks ok if you are thin with no fat and lumps. I can’t see it looking great if you are not thin as the material isn’t forgiving. I include bridesmaid dresses in this too. Ok if you are thin and can carry it off. Also helps to be young. Not so good if you are older and have lumps to cover.
I don’t think their working practice of ripping designers off is acceptable either.
