How come Shein has a such pretty clothes?

Ihatesundaysandmywork · 02/03/2025 16:54

Please note I’m talking about the patterns and style- NOT the quality.

I get lots of adverts on FB and Insta and I must say I love lots of their clothes how they look- I hardly ever shop there, very rarely, as I know the quality is not good.
How come the clothes look so pretty?
All these patterned quilted jackets, denim jackets, bright t shirts, dresses, lots of different bags…
If I walk into any high street clothes shop, all I can see it boring oversized or cropped hoodies and ugly bottoms, all in boring minimalist colours like black or grey or white.

I get all of my blouses from shein amd some I've had quite a while tbh. They make such pretty sheer print type blouses which I love andbwear with vests underneath. I also have loads of A-Line dresses from them with lovely prints which I wear in the summer and, again some I've had for bloody ages. The trick os to look at the pictures in the reviews before buying. I've never had a massive problem with thwm and love their curve range.

My daughters buy quite a bit from Shein. Most of the items they have got are good quality. They always have reviews to check and returns are so easy. I have got some lovely dresses from there. I got one to wear to a wedding last year and I kept being complimented on it. The wigs are really good too. My daughter also got some amazing knee high boots the other day. Great as all the shoe shops have closed down now

Great as all the shoe shops have closed down now

AND why is that….

Because they can't compete with the likes of Shein….and a public who don't care about the backstory.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 02/03/2025 19:34

Yeh I've bought a couple of things from Shein after abstaining for so long. Items came and they are sooo cheap. I can tell straight away anyone wearing clothing from Shein and when my items arrived I thought "yep, looks like cheap crap".

Never again but I agree they do look good on the site.

SouthernTip · 02/03/2025 19:39

TheChosenTwo · 02/03/2025 19:32

I’m not saying they weren’t nice dresses but I don’t think anyone in their right mind would have turned around and said anything derogatory about the bridal party outfits within earshot of them!!

I also wonder of our sense of qualiTy is distorted by so much cr*p.

I too can spot the poor quality. Awful seams, stitching, poorly designed, ill fitting.

A friend of mine had to buy a whole case of new holiday clothes whilst away, as the SHEIN fabrics clung so badly. Unbreathable synthetics that smelt awful in the heat.

Tiddlywinkly · 02/03/2025 19:40

C4 On Demand currently have a Shein documentary going undercover in a Chinese factory. I will NEVER buy from them.

CatamaranViper · 02/03/2025 19:43

I refuse to buy anything from shein or temu. I have been given a couple of hand me downs from my friend from there which are now my decorating/gardening clothes. But I can't bring myself to do it.

BUT, I agree the patterns are fab. I've been inspired to try and recreate them myself with mixed success, but I've only just learned how to sew.

Is this an ad???

for balance: Shein is a pile of immoral, planet choking shite made by women who sacrifice their health and childhood to be paid a pittance.

No it’s not add.
They don’t need add in here from me, I think they have plenty of that everywhere on each social media.
I'm just genuinely curious as why the clothes look good and nothing in shops is like that available.
I’m looking up one of the floral cute shacket style jacket, it is on and actually its Forever 21 brand, it’s about £9.
The closest one I can get in UK is on Joules online for £90 ( floral pattern)

Absolutely agree with you, our high street stuff is terrible, same boring crap from the same old shops when I was young there was loads of choice of shops. I don’t love Shein but I do like the options it provides, better than what I find in the high street stores

Hairisbad · 02/03/2025 18:55

Our DD bought her bridesmaids dresses from shein.

Bridesmaids dresses were fully lined just needed turning up by quite a few inches.
And they were close to the correct size.
Everyone who came to the wedding were complementary about them.

Probably made underpaid workers with no employment rights. But glad they looked nice. 👍

even the MN favourites such as Seasalt, Hobbs and White Stuff only have 2/5 ratings.
Don't be fooled that exp dive means ethical.
Those who sneer at Shein, Temu etc have to consider that people buy according to their budget.
Also, the sneerers make assumptions and seem
not to have actually bought anything, I have seen clothes from Shein, Temu and Cider and the quality was very good so not obviously cheap crap.

This all day long.

Appalling company. It’s easy to rape the planet and abuse your workforce and still make ‘pretty’ looking online images for all your polyester landfill shite.

My cousin has a dress company. They stole all her designs and produced with with cheap labour and shit materials.

This makes me so angry, also happened to a lovely friend of mine.

Temu and Shein shoppers are enabling this disgusting theft.

I get that for many people money is vey tight and especially if you are trying to clothe kids who grow every 20 seconds, that these sites are highly appealing.

For many more people however it's just a gross need to keep up with the Jones' and have an amazing "haul" of clothes every few months.

Arrivederla · 02/03/2025 20:12

Shein and Temu have been implicated in using forced labour, and there have also been concerns around their possible use of child labour; have you not wondered why their products are so cheap?

Yes, other companies have been accused of dodgy labour practices but nothing on the scale of Shein and Temu.

That's the problem with these companies. I have a small Etsy shop selling printable junk journal papers; Temu have stolen many of my designs. It's really difficult ( if not impossible ) to stop them. Drives me crackers.

Woodworm2020 · 02/03/2025 20:18

I think they copy artisans too. Not just that, steal their work (a phrase I’ve seen thrown around on instagram)

The clothes tend to last though so can be worn or sold on.

I'm very wary of Temu and think it is dodgy and sinister

roses2 · 02/03/2025 20:21

I won't touch Shein clothes although I bought some artificial wedding button holes last year and they were really beautiful and well made.

This is because the fabric and cutting/sewing of the product, the quality checks are 10x superior.

Its sad we're so wasteful and fast fashion has flourished. It's causing environmental issues when manufacturing, distribution, destroying or even donating to charities. I watched a documentary a while back about charities shopping clothes donations to other countries, these countries couldn't use them and they were polluting the waters, land and killing wildlife.

I get times are hard for a lot of people. In an ideal world we'd go back to fewer quality garments, rather than keeping up with the latest trends.

I know people who use shein, my DC have had gifts bought from there, the quality can be ok. However, anyone who says the material is excellent is wrong.

It's so difficult to know where to shop ethically. Seasalt are certified B corp, yet this directory rates them very poorly.
I've never heard good things about SHEIN though.

FredaFox · 02/03/2025 20:26

I see the adverts and clothes colleagues have bought, I get tempted by the prints more than the prices.
But I just can't bring myself to buy from Shein and Temu. I can't accept the conditions the workers are in.
It's modern day slavery.
I'm not wealthy so I don't have a lot of options but I even avoid Primark who had sweat shops in Manchester a few years ago.
I buy less but higher quality items that will last.

GreyDuck · 02/03/2025 20:33

I've never bought from shein, so I'm not speaking from personal experience but I do see a lot of small designers/makers on Instagram complaining about having their designs stolen though. Sometimes the original product images are used to sell the dupes, so of course they look good.
OP if there are particular items you like, but you'd rather shop elsewhere you could post some examples here and we can try to source similar things for you?

This was what I was going to say. Shein are known for ripping off independent designers. That’s how they have so many cute/unusual/interesting designs. They copy others and produce them quickly for the masses. Another way they are an awful company.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 02/03/2025 20:45

I get really fed up of reading on here that SHEIN is the worst company in the universe ever, yet so many brands beloved of MN are even worse.

Admitting to buying a dress from SHEIN on here is tantamount to kicking puppies, yet every second thread will recommend something equally polyester-ish from Zara or H&M and somehow that doesn’t trigger the same responses, even though both companies have used sweatshops and forced child labour, as do Adidas and Nike.

goodnightgrumble · 02/03/2025 20:52

Highlandhardrain · 02/03/2025 19:14

According to a Channel 4 investigation, workers supplying Shein were paid as little as 3p per garment. So no, I don't think their clothes are great.

It is appalling. My sister shows me all her bargains from Temu and Shein and I just can't support them.

There is of course the option not to buy if you can't afford it. It's not compulsory to have new outfits.
