Should I go for the chop?

I have long blonde hair. Just past bra strap length. It is naturally wavy/frizzy. I straighten it and wear it in a ponytail everyday. I love having long hair but hate the faff. I never wear it down, it takes too much time to sort out.

I’m thinking of getting it cut to a long bob, so just skimming my shoulders. It would be a lot quicker and easier to style, and I could wear it up or down.

Had anyone ever made the chop and not regretted it??

It doesn’t help that I’m 40 next year and worried this is a mid life crisis!!

Opposite here. I have nipple length hair that I always wear down as I can't be bothered with it. Shorter hair takes so much styling to look good in my experience. I guess texture makes a difference. Have you had shorter, low maintenance styles you like before?

MrsJHernandez · 01/03/2025 18:09

I've just cut off my long-ish hair. Have a slightly inverted lob with long layers and the bulk thinned out.

It's so much easier to wash and dry (especially with my new hot brush - never used one before and I love it!), and I'm wearing it down more now. No regrets here. It'll grow long again in a year or so anyway.

I had an ear length bob as a teen and it was very
easy.

My hair is wavy and frizzy but straightens easily and stays straight. It is also very thick, which is why it’s been such a pain having it long. I’m hoping having it shorter means there is less of it to sort out.

Long bob sounds fine. I wouldn't go above shoulder length though as I find that sort of length harder to deal with if anything

TheOGCCL · 01/03/2025 18:24

I don't think you'd regret it, it doesn't actually sound that drastic and will grow again pretty fast! I think you'd find it seemed thicker and fuller and look healthier.

Says as someone who has over the years tried every length going.

Is it a spinny one, or one you turn yourself? Mine smells of burning hair so looking for recommendations of a new one.

Cut it! A change is great, and it will grow if you hate it. It’s only a bob, so will grow out fine.

Bigfishes · 01/03/2025 18:42

Do it. So liberating

MightyBust · 01/03/2025 18:44

Oh, I thought you meant a significantly shorter style. It sounds like it will be fine.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 01/03/2025 18:49

I'd go for it. Worst case, you wash, straighten and wear in a shorter pony tail!

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 01/03/2025 19:03

I wouldn’t call shoulder-length a chop but I suppose it’s all relative!

Your hair sounds a lot like my sister’s. It needs skilful cutting to make sure it doesn’t go triangular. She gets an undercut which removes most of the bulk and sits beautifully. Obviously this makes for an edgier look when you do wear it in a ponytail which may not be for everyone.

Lol I wondered what you were talking about for a second! Doh!

It doesn't spin, but it does dry hair pretty quickly and easy to use. I have quite frizzy hair when it's blow dried with a traditional dryer, or air dried, and I have no frizz after using this.

It's by Mermade. Had 25% off earlier this week so I went for it after looking at the reviews. Ordered Sunday night and it came Tuesday morning! I also bought the waver but will be returning it.

HolySchmokes · 01/03/2025 19:22

I cut mine off exactly as you described from the same length you had now and hated it! Finally a year later it’s a decent length and I no longer hate my reflection.

Oh no, why?

Nipple length hair means something quite different for me now, compared to what it meant thirty years ago.

2025willbemytime · 02/03/2025 16:04

I had a bob cut in to just below my shoulders. Aged me ten years immediately

This is what I am worried about! I’m starting to fret about reaching 40 (I know I shouldn’t) and don’t want to age myself even more.

I had mine cut into an above shoulders Bob just over a year ago and I've never regretted it. Got a lot of comments about looking younger. It does depends on your face shape though, I have an oval face so it suits me.

I was only in my thirties when it happened. I'm early fifties now with much longer hair and I could pass for early to mid 40s. I was brunette then, blonde now if it's relevant.

HolySchmokes · 02/03/2025 16:25

Well, probably because I don’t like short hair 😂 I have had long hair for about 15 years so I don’t know why I thought having it short would be a good idea.

Same, I have similar hair to the OP and age and the long bob cut definitely made me look more youthful. It looked so healthy and much thicker. If you can’t be bothered to style it you can just tie it back.
