What is the perfect outfit to wear to watch the rugby?

LegalBarbie · 20/02/2025 17:12

I have been invited to the rugby and want to make a seriously good impression. What can I wear?

It will be cold (for certain) and there is dinner afterwards so can’t rely on a coat to do all the work.

I know nothing (less than nothing) about rugby. I am assuming that will be forgiven if I can just look hot. Please help!

Where is the Rugby ? Twickenham etc or a Premiership ground ? Will you be in hospitality or in the stands ?

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 20/02/2025 17:30

Where are you going, are you in hospitality, is the dinner in hospitality or a restaurant?

BaronessBomburst · 20/02/2025 17:36

Knitted dress, (thermal) tights, and boots. You can layer a cardigan under your coat for extra warmth, and add a nice scarf.

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 17:37

Big puffa coat. Everyone else will have one. Layers underneath. Even down to thermal undies that you remove in the loos at the dinner venue. So over the thermals, a light camel cashmere pullover? Then a quilted blouson or fleece if it’s really cold! Big enough bag for storing clothes you take off. Check stadium bag size rules! Wear decent jeans or pale cream tapered trousers and chunky suede boots - keep your feet warm. Big scarf and pull on bobble hat. Pale colours not team colours. Gloves of your choice.

Microbantime · 20/02/2025 18:06

Nope, no big puffer coat if it’s the 6 Nations. The seats in the major stadiums are really close together. Supporters get up and down out their seats all the time, a full length coat will just get in the way, can get caught between the seats and ultimately rip. Warm jacket, hat, scarf and gloves are a must, particularly if you are seated high up due to the breeze. If you are lower down it’s not as noticeable. There is a fair bit of body heat.

I usually wear jeans, boots, thermal base layer and then a polo neck or cashmere jumper. I also have knee length thermal socks which I push down if I am going out for dinner after. I don’t think it’s to be that cold this weekend if that’s when you are going.

Bag sizes are small only. A4 size.

Thank you for replies.
Hospitality - Murrayfield <shivers> Watching the match (with a buffet?) then afterwards out for dinner

At Murrayfield, as many layers as you can physically wear!

SirChenjins · 20/02/2025 18:31

Murrayfield?! Wear lots of layers - more than you think you'll need - and top with a big coat. Edinburgh is freezing at the moment (well, not literally, but it's cold here).

verycloakanddaggers · 20/02/2025 18:38

Who do you need to impress? Edited to say assume a date as you mention looking hot!

For rugby, just something warm and comfortable.

Bad luck having to go at all IMO Wink

Microbantime · 20/02/2025 18:39

So, the wales game then? Fabulous. I stand by the upper tier being breezy and the lower tier is warmer. There is a lot of body heat generated. I was there for the Ireland game 2 weeks ago and it wasn’t that cold. It was just breezy/chilly and that was me in the upper, West stand. Didn’t need a jacket for the Scotland v South Africa or Oz games. We were in the South stand for both and that was November last year.

You’ll get warm walking back into town for dinner. The adrenaline will keep you going at the start. Wave and I’ll wave back 😂

Florabelle · 20/02/2025 18:40

Murrayfield everyone dresses for warmth. Base layers, nice ideally polo neck jumper, jeans or trousers, boots, gloves a hat etc Anything less warm and you’ll look like a weirdo !! Enjoy xx

devildeepbluesea · 20/02/2025 18:40

I’m used to the Millennium Staduum but from memory, whilst I would generally agree with @Microbantime , Murrayfield is bloody cold, has a bit of a wind tunnel thing going on and I’d be layering up. I’d still avoid taking a full length coat though.

LegalBarbie · 20/02/2025 18:58

Thanks. Thats all really helpful. Definitely understood re the full length coat.

With hospitality - do people wear dresses? I guess it is still outdoors. I just found an article on Joules that said don’t get make my look too casual? Gah. What is a cold weather dress?!

Going to buy some new long boots

OP posts:
TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 19:02

@LegalBarbie I would be amazed if anyone wore dresses. It’s not Royal Ascot. It’s freezing cold rugby. The rules are very complicated and getting worse. Even the commentators don’t know what is going on half the time. Just get excited if a Scottish player crashes over the line holding the ball. Everyone else will. Hopefully you are not supporting Wales!

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 19:03

I find a polo neck too hot for dinner afterwards. A good cashmere over a base layer is better. Good scarf over the lot.

unsync · 20/02/2025 19:17

If you are getting new boots, they need thick or insulating soles. The cold seeps up from the concrete. Make sure they have enough room for a good pair of merino wool socks too.

OatFlatWhiteForMe · 20/02/2025 19:17

Murryfield is colder than cold - aim for warm smart casual.
We went to see Scotland v Italy a few weeks ago then onto Kyloe for dinner so wanted to be warm but Saturday night dinner ready. I wore a woolen midi dress from Reiss, thermal tights (primark) and the warmest midi length coat I own with knee high suede boots, scarf, gloves and a cross body bag. I skipped a hat but 90% of people there had one for watching the match.

I had wool socks over my tights too,

redfishcat · 20/02/2025 19:34

Depends how cold you get.
I get cold sat still at rugby matches. I have a season ticket
I wear :
Thermal long johns and padded walking trousers. Wool socks and walking boots for the insulated soles
Long sleeve merino base layer, short sleeved thermal vest, Aran wool jumper, down gilet, down coat, long to my knees puffy coat . Fleece ear warmer, woollen hat and some times the hood of the coat
Scarf, in my team colours obviously
Skiing gloves with merino glove liners
I take a walking seat pad to sit on as the plastic seats pull heat from my bottom
And I am often still really cold. Can't imagine wearing normal indoor clothes and just my big coat on top

I'd have to go back to the hotel to change into normal clothes before going out for dinner

You will be sat outside for about two hours without moving, pop outside now and see how long you last in the clothes you think might be okay

And I am very jealous, the singing of the national anthems is spine tingling

BaronessBomburst · 20/02/2025 22:41

Maybe consider taking some self-heating hand warmers too.

The link is just to show what I mean, I've never used this brand. I bought mine in Lidl.

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 23:01

@Microbantime I attend Prem football regularly. Unless the Murrayfield seats are designed for children and you weigh 20 Stone, women can easily wear a long puffa coat. Loads of people do. DH does too and we don’t get friendly with our neighbours. Everyone dresses to stay warm. The hospitality areas will be warmer and they could be better seats.

ChocoChocoLatte · 20/02/2025 23:06

Good grief, it's the rugby, not Buckingham Palace. We were there for the Scot v Ire match. We were wearing boots, long socks under jeans, a thermal vest under a rugby top, a hat, gloves, and a full-length North Face jacket.

I'll be wearing similar to the Welsh match but expect it to be slightly balmier in March LOL

Enjoy every second - the atmosphere is electric!

TizerorFizz · 20/02/2025 23:10

What about the meal afterwards? Did you go for one @ChocoChocoLatte ? Were you in hospitality? It does make some difference.

Edinburgh on a rugby Saturday? It's not a particularly glammed up city anyway but pubs and restaurants will be full of people dressed as if they've just come from a rugby match.

Exactly this.
