What is the perfect outfit to wear to watch the rugby?

LegalBarbie · 20/02/2025 17:12

I have been invited to the rugby and want to make a seriously good impression. What can I wear?

It will be cold (for certain) and there is dinner afterwards so can’t rely on a coat to do all the work.

I know nothing (less than nothing) about rugby. I am assuming that will be forgiven if I can just look hot. Please help!

Bluetooth eye mask and a sleeping bag.

If the op does not usually go to rugby she might not want to wear a rugby shirt. I’d never wear one. It’s not about being flanked up it’s about being warm and comfortable at the match and not looking like a mascot. Then most people want to be comfortable in a restaurant and not overheating in full cold weather gear. So layers she already owns would work best, not trying to look like a rugby clone with clothes she would need to buy.

Wiennetta · 21/02/2025 10:28

Goodness me it’s Edinburgh not the North Pole 😂 It’s forecast to be double digits this weekend. It’s not that cold. It was cold for a couple of days but even then was +2 or 3. I’d wear jeans, boots and a nice cashmere jumper potentially with a nice layer underneath, a jacket and then a hat/scarf. Edinburgh pubs and restaurants will be full of rugby fans afterwards.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 21/02/2025 11:11

I was bloody cold last time I went to watch rugby. I was cold when I used to go to Royal Ascot. I was cold at Wimbledon. I feel the cold.

I'd wrap up warm. I'd take gloves as well.

majordramas · 21/02/2025 13:22

If it were me I would wear

Flat Black suede knee boots with extra socks
Either my smartest black jeans or fave pleather trousers
Black jumper thermal top under
Nice necklace and earrings as it's hospitality
Big long black puffer coat
My nicest cross body small handbag.
Gloves scarf and hat

Lovely understated but nicest makeup

Murryfield can be a bit of a trek on foot so definitely flat boots.

Chocolateteabag · 21/02/2025 14:02

I'm in Edinburgh right now - it's windy but not cold cold - dress for dinner and then add layers - take a comb to repair your hair if it's windy

Rereading this and just want to say if you intend to look 'hot' then going to the rugby isn't the right place for you. Eyes won't be on you but on the match.

The Murrayfield website (which is a better thing than the Joules website) it's states Smart casual, they allow rugby tops but no ripped jeans or trainers.

LegalBarbie · 21/02/2025 16:51

‘Hot’ is the ambition but really I would settle for Appropriate and Approachable. 😁

It is corporate hospitality so we are expected to network and some of the networkees are charming… It is a big event for me and so I want to get it right (and also not let down my host).

Take loo roll. There's still some catching up to do in terms of the amount of women attending internationals.

TizerorFizz · 21/02/2025 17:07

@LegalBarbie Yes. You want to look your best. In the circumstances! Therefore don’t wear a rugby shirt. No one will judge you for wearing a puffa coat. If you are too hot, open it up. You might even get transport to the restaurant. I’d definitely go with cashmere and I sometimes wear wool trousers. Not knitted but decent fitted wool. Hospitality should be ok for toilet paper! Some odd suggestions here! Bubble hat for definite.

TizerorFizz · 21/02/2025 17:12

@LegalBarbie Although HC is more of a racing brand, they do smart sports really well. If you had a coat like these you have nailed it. They do great hats and scarves too. I prefer the black one and you won’t spill over the seat!

Oh I have a coat not dissimilar to these. Although mine looks a little bit more urban-streets, which I sense is not the vibe.

Pretty sure hospo has toilets that are a bit nicer than the stands ones? I've not done it at Murrayfield, but the stadiums I have been to do?

I'd do a smart-ish jean (in washed black maybe), leather Chelsea boots and soft black jumper, French tucked. Chuck a silky/floaty t shirt on underneath for dinner? Classy jewellery and understated but flawless make up.

TizerorFizz · 21/02/2025 23:26

@LegalBarbie I don’t think a more urban look coat matters. The general idea is quilted and if it’s got a fur hood, bonus.

TizerorFizz · 22/02/2025 00:28

@Legal These are smart plus the ideas above re jeans and tops are good.

Hospitality at a match is generally in one of the function rooms at the stadium, overlooking the pitch if you're lucky, or can be in a marquee outside.

You usually eat a sit down meal before kick off, then go back in afterwards for more drinks and nibbles, sometimes to meet some
of the players depending on who is hosting. But obvs hospitality varies, it can be a stand up buffet too. It is unlikely to be at a restaurant in Edinburgh.

TriangleLight · 22/02/2025 08:19

I’d wear a jumper dress type thing or knitted short skirt, thick tights like the Primark fleece lined ones. Socks and chunky soled boots. A nice coat (your quilted one sounds perfect), scarf and take gloves and a hat.

Then you’ll be warm enough outside. But not roasting in the hospitality bit, and ready for dinner

Bodumb · 22/02/2025 08:22

I’m going, I’m wearing jeans boots, thermal vest, cashmere rollneck and Uniqlo compact thin jacket under a tailored coat for chic

Bodumb · 22/02/2025 08:23

Lol at cream at any sporting fixture unless you’re being carried in a sedan chair and not touching anything

Bodumb · 22/02/2025 08:23

lol at understated but flawless make up

Depends how cold you get.
I get cold sat still at rugby matches. I have a season ticket
I wear :
Thermal long johns and padded walking trousers. Wool socks and walking boots for the insulated soles
Long sleeve merino base layer, short sleeved thermal vest, Aran wool jumper, down gilet, down coat, long to my knees puffy coat . Fleece ear warmer, woollen hat and some times the hood of the coat
Scarf, in my team colours obviously
Skiing gloves with merino glove liners
I take a walking seat pad to sit on as the plastic seats pull heat from my bottom
And I am often still really cold. Can't imagine wearing normal indoor clothes and just my big coat on top

I'd have to go back to the hotel to change into normal clothes before going out for dinner

You will be sat outside for about two hours without moving, pop outside now and see how long you last in the clothes you think might be okay

And I am very jealous, the singing of the national anthems is spine tingling

I’m also a season ticket holder. I have never seen anybody look like you. Are you watching it in Iceland?

AmeliaTangfastic · 22/02/2025 08:29

Thermal leggings
Thermal long sleeve top
Long sleeved t shirt
Jeans
Two pairs of socks
Snow boots
Fleece
Scarf
Hat
Puffer jacket
Gloves
Huge handbag with dress, tights and shoes in it

Based on the last time I went to Murrayfield 🥶

mitogoshigg · 22/02/2025 08:30

Layers, layers, more layers.

I'd wear thermal tights thermal long sleeve top, knee length dress of some description, scarf, socks, boots, cardigan, coat. Check forecast because it's warmed up down here, but even at 12 degrees take the above plus hat and gloves

mitogoshigg · 22/02/2025 08:32

And yes, knee high boots that meet dress if you're going down this route ... or just wear jeans but wear tights under them (take off in loos after match, too tip, take a small handbag as they are strict on this but have fold up bag inside for excess clothing

TizerorFizz · 22/02/2025 14:54

Hospitality is slightly different. You are not outside for 2 hours. You go inside at half time. Plus all the time before the match. The last time I went to football, and I go regularly, lighter coloured separates were being worn. Just depends what suits you and how fashionable you want to be. The op isn’t playing rugby, she’s watching it from a comfortable setting and wanted to look”hot”. What I posted is about as hot as it gets. At rugby.
