Wearing bootleg jeans second time around (now middle-aged)?

hippospot · 20/02/2025 16:17

I tried on some very dark indigo bootleg jeans (Mint Velvet). They fit beautifully and are so flattering.
But I have this nagging feeling about them because this is all I wore in the 90s, usually with heeled boots. I now live in flats/trainers. Would they work? I'm 50 now and can't figure out what looks good anymore... but I know I look wrong in skinnies not only because I've gained 3kg in the last 10 years.

Thoughts?

I've jumped on the bandwagon and bought some Eva from M&S. sparks gave me some money off. They have an almost bewildering array of jeans at the moment so I'm glad I knew what I was looking for!

socks1107 · 22/02/2025 15:56

I've just ordered some Eva jeans! I've dropped a dress size since Xmas so don't want to spend loads as I want to loose another size yet, they are what I'm looking for to get me through this mid period

TizerorFizz · 22/02/2025 16:44

I have some boot cut jeans. I don’t think they have to be worn over heels. Chunky trainers are fine. Lower heeled bouts too. I’m nearly 70 and I find them easy to wear and I definitely don’t want skinnies.

Yiayoula · 22/02/2025 16:52

Another recent convert to M & S wide leg jeans here - mid 70s both in age and style now ….🤣 absolutely love them !

dreamingofsun · 22/02/2025 17:54

so eva fans. what length did you get? I'm 5ft 5 with fairly longish legs. Used to have regular before M&S messed up sizing. Dont like ones half way up my ankles. It looks like people who are 5ft 3 get short so i'm thinking regular?

I bought these at the weekend and will be wearing them with trainers. They are really flattering

What sort of sizing are they, Im usually a 16 in Next?

They come up quite large. I would say I’m a 16 in next but got these jeans last week and the size 14 are perfect.

Gettingbysomehow · 22/02/2025 22:49

I always wear boot cut jeans. They are incredibly flattering and suit my shape perfectly. Personally I think skinny jeans are vile unless you are very tall snd slim. Most people look like hobbits in them.

I'm your height and got regular - short were fine too tbh but reg looked a little better

Tootytoot78 · 22/02/2025 23:38

I'm 70 and never stopped wearing bootleg. I am typical pear shape, and they suit my shape.
Didn't care if they weren't in fashion, I love them, and they look great on me!

Leggings and skinny jeans are another matter, I wouldn't be seen dead in them.

I got a pair from next yesterday, indigo, bootleg, soft stretchy denim, after the last few years trying to feel good in skinnies or straight jeans these were like heaven, I'm having no regrets, I will mostly wear them with converse or flat adidas trainers.

I have always preferred the fit of bootleg on me. I'm 43!

@RoseDog which style / name are they please? They sound right up my street!

dayslikethese1 · 23/02/2025 01:34

I bought some off Depop last year. They very much remind me of a pair I had around the year 1999/2000 but much higher waisted thank goodness! I wear mine with hi-tops. They're dark blue and from New Look originally (NL jeans always fit me really well for some reason). They may not be fashionable but I love them, much prefer the shape to wide leg or barrel personally.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 23/02/2025 01:44

I've been wearing them and wide legged jeans for two years already, as soon as I spotted them in shops again. So glad the 1990s trend seems to have great longevity.

Me too. Normally wear Next lift slim and shape in a 16R in the bootcut or straight.
Got the Mint Velvet ones in a 14S (I’m 5ft 4).

ErrolTheDragon · 23/02/2025 07:52

Damn, I think I might have thrown out my 90s bootcut jeans at a point when I'd lost weight and there were nice slim leg (not skinnies!). Although I'm not sure I've got footwear that would go with them now either.

im 5”9 and the regular are almost too long! Sizings from all clothes shops vary so much!

I'm less than 5' so used to everything being too long....but M and S short was about 5" too long and New Look petite range was shown on a model who was 5'5" so I didn't bother even trying them!

M&S have messed up their lengths, I'm 5'1" and their short (in other styles I've tried since then) have gone from perfect to several inches too long. That's not so bad on a straight leg as they're easy to turn up but not for anything shaped either in or out in the lower leg.
I think they do some styles in 'extra short' but they've never had any available when I've looked

LadeedahYadaYada · 23/02/2025 09:19

if you like it - do it

dreamingofsun · 23/02/2025 09:24

Nearly went ahead and bought some Eva's using my discount code, but the latest review says they have a crease down the front of the leg! Why do M&S take perfectly great jeans and ruin them. We spend years in our childhood's telling mothers not to iron creases and now M&S does it!! Also M&S if you are reading, i dont like turn ups either - you have ruined Harper jeans and the only ones that dont have turn-ups are always out of stock....i wonder why.

I'm wearing my new Eva's right now and definitely no crease! The flares I also tried on has one though. Not the Eva. Had a sparks code so only £20

For some odd reason the light indigo jeans do have a crease, though it fades after washing. The medium indigo and black don't. I haven't bought the dark indigo yet. Though am eyeing them up!

dreamingofsun · 23/02/2025 10:11

So bought 4 pairs of eva partly due to this thread and the discount. Medium indigo and dark indigo, 2 different lengths as still not sure which is best and as someone else said its hard to take bootcut up. Maybe i should stick to the no-buy thread which i did last year.....but you have broken me.

I'm not sure which is worse, jeans creased down the front or ones which have been very firmly pressed flat along the seams - ok on skinnies and slim leg but clownish for anything at all flared.

I have the same feeling about bootcut jeans(I'm 47). There's a niggling feeling that makes me think frumpy and boring. Maybe because last time I wore them I was frumpy and boringly bland.
