What colour and style of knitwear are your most used?

Just that really.

I have a slouchy grey New Look cardigan, a cropped cream New Look cardigan, a red M&S roll neck. Also a navy funnel neck ex Topshop jumper that I got in a charity shop for £5. For work I have a beige M&S roll neck and a bright pink M&S crew neck jumper.

They are all tatty and need replacing and I am leaning towards merino/cashmere. I need to smarten up my work look too.

What knitwear do you recommend having?

I’ve got some lambswool jumpers from Uniqlo that are a few years old that are still looking pretty good, but this years lambswool jumpers looked thin and not anywhere near the same quality. The merino ribbed roll neck tops are great though. I’ve got cashmere from Uniqlo but from Vinted which is also great.
My most worn knitwear is a light grey cashmere jumper from Jack Wills (via Vinted) which I’ve had for a couple of years.

Ahh the declining quality, I know. I picked up an Oasis crew cardigan in a charity shop for £4. Felt lovely and when I looked it's 100% cotton. Lovely detailing and long fitted balloon sleeves. You'd never find that now.

My office at work can be very cold! So I wear a lot of knitwear. My most worn are probably navy v neck or boat neck (I have one of each) and an olive green, chunky cowl neck.

I want some cardigans for Spring, but can't see many in the shops...also don't want to buy anything too cheap as they tend to bobble quickly

Yes I think I need a good quality v neck. So far I've got a cashmina vest, a round neck navy cashmere from John Lewis (colour was perfect), and a cotton crew cardi from a charity shop.

I am usually a fan of entirely natural fabrics but I have had surprising success with some synthetic knitwear from both M&S and John Lewis for every day/casual wear. I have a grey hoodie style from M&S that still looks good (although is a bit stretched now) after 3 years and a brown v-neck with a collar that has lasted a similar time.

John Lewis cashmere is a good mix between very high quality and poor quality - lasts much better than the M&S stuff I find but isn't as expensive as the White Company or similar. I've also had good knitwear from Mint Velvet, including a white cashmere jumper that is starting to look a bit tired now but for a white jumper to have lasted 3 winters... I'm impressed! And it was only £85 when I bought it so not crazy expensive. [I'm actually toying with investigating how to dye cashmere as the jumper itself has kept its shape really well, it's just that the colour is not as fresh and there are some very mild stains].

Recently got a few bits from Phase 8 and have been very disappointed in the quality. Luckily I got them at a sample sale so I'm not as upset as I could be as they weren't expensive but I doubt they'll look good beyond one year, max.

Oh yes you've reminded me why I stopped cheap knitwear. M&S can be good, just so hit and miss.

I'm not sure why I'm quite enjoying hearing in detail what jumpers and cardigans people have 😂

@redstripestar I enjoy this too, great thread! I haven't bought from M&S for a while, but found their jumpers a bit hit and miss too, in particular the sleeves are never long enough. I did have a pale green cashmere cardigan from them for years, which I wore until it literally wore out.

Vintage all the way for me.
I'm getting a lot of wear out of an old label M&S orange cashmere jumper from a charity shop, no bobbles and so warm. Another favourite came from Vinted and is a mango wool and cashmere mix cardigan £6 . I adore knitwear and have quite the collection now.

Try charity shops esp the mens section.

triggers34 · 23/02/2025 14:28

After seeing the link you like I had a quick look on Vinted filtering for mohair and pink. I'm not able to link but there is a gorgeous handknit , bright pink size 16 £45 , other lovely ones too.

henlake7 · 23/02/2025 15:07

I think my main ones tend to be short, fitted jumpers and bumcovering chunky cardies to throw on.
I dont do animal products though so no wool. Alot of bright colours and patterns though coz Im a giant child!😄
I like Joanie, Run & Fly, Joules and also Disturbia (they have some lovely embroidered knitwear).

Parrotpirate · 23/02/2025 21:03

Charity shop mens dept is often a great place to find woollens
My best buy this year has been a pale green oversized lambswool crewneck. So cosy and I think pretty stylish.

redstripestar · 23/02/2025 22:14

This is a revelation about the mens department.

I am basically sewn into my pale grey and navy cashmere cardigans, and I have a beige slouchy cashmere jumper.

LawrenceSMarlowforPresident · 23/02/2025 22:47

Lovely thread. My current favourite is a grey cotton cardigan with large buttons. It's slightly cropped and looks good (IMO!) with higher waisted trousers.

Recently I bought a lightweight cashmere jumper in a dark camel colour. It wasn't expensive (only aboutï¿¡40) and I really love it, I think it will be quite a workhorse and go with many items I already have.

For warmer weather, I have two identical cotton cardigans, one black and one navy. They aren't anything out of the ordinary, but I think they fit me well and look quite nice with dresses and skirts.

LucyLoo1972 · 15/01/2026 05:42

I have the msot lovely jumpers from Campbells of Beauly. they have a sale on at the moment. I have a beautiful bright green knitted chunky funnel neck that was £100 in the sale.

minnowonthesay · 15/01/2026 05:54

I buy the M & S cashmere in the sale, this jumper went from £100 to £29.99, it’s gorgeous colours

What colour and style of knitwear are your most used?
CeeMmm · 25/03/2026 05:22

Mostly soft knit V-neck sweaters and vests that I can layer over a button down top, crewneck tee or a lightweight poloneck.

gerispringer · 25/03/2026 05:33

Ive got some lovely vintage Marion Foale handknitted cardigans which I bought years ago. They are mostly cotton snd wash beautifully. Uniqlo cashmere I bought when reduced but doesn't age well. Poetry have some lovely knitwear and I have a heavy cotton cardigan and jumpers which I wear loads. I bought a wool jumper from Finistere but have never worn it as its not been cold enough may put on Vinted.

fiorentina · 25/03/2026 06:41

I’ve been very happy with my Uniqlo knitwear. Have several cashmere round neck jumpers - I’d recommend sizing up. Also their wool roll necks and round necks for work have stayed in good condition. For more unusual shapes and styles I like Cos or Other Stories and tend to go for more texture with the wool types. Light grey is my go to but have some brighter colours too.’

GameOfJones · 25/03/2026 07:46

I struggle with wool so my favourite jumpers are the Uniqlo 3D knit ones in black, forest green or red. They usually have a few different styles each year and they're 100% cotton. They're also not too hot so I can easily layer them with a vest underneath when it's really cold. Love them and I've had some of them for more than 5 years that still look perfect.

Barnsleybonuz · 25/03/2026 08:24

My best most useful jumper which is about 5 years old and is in perfect condtion and looks good with anything is an £8 primark men’s crew neck. Honestly. It washes beautifully, it doesn’t bobble, it hangs perfectly. It’s actually cream and it hasn’t gone grey, the colour is still perfect. Sometimes perfect bargains are found in the strangest places

AnnaMagnani · 25/03/2026 08:29

2 proper wool jumpers from House of Bruar for when it's really cold.

Nearly new cashmere for when I want a smart/casual knitwear top.
